slash or hendrix

Ok, I've been having this huge argument with a friend. He says Slash is better than Jimi and I keep saying no, but he says "Evry1 says yes" when they rly don't. I just want your opinion. Cuz most of you have prolly been playing guitar much longer than me.

Slash or Hendrix, that is a hard question to answer at least for me anyway. They both were great, just in different ways. Personally I like Slash over Hendrix just because I like a harder style of rock that Slash plays but in skill wise, in my opinion Hendrix is better. If said person ever exclaims Slash better than Hendrix you can give him some leeway, Slash>Hendrix in HIS type of sound Hendrix>Slash in overall Skill (song writing etc). That is all I have to say on the matter and I hope that helps you out with your little predicament with your friend over who is greater. I could actually drone on and on about this topic but it is late here (round 1:30) and I am getting to tired to come up with anymore more straight out thoughts.

Yeah, Jimi. With Slash it's like "oh, guitar," but with Jimi it's often more of a "what the f*** was THAT?!"

Bro... the day Slash writes something close to Voodoo Child (slight return)... you could ask that question...

The first time I heard Hendrix (as a guitar player of course), I thought... damn that's a crappy recording.... what a shame Jimmi didn't had the chance of recording with more than a 4 track... but the feel... the quality of the notes... maybe not a million notes but just the right ones.. man... you can not get that with all the pro tools in the world.

Too hard a question to answer. Hendrix was an innovator and came up with a lot of the standard riffs that are still around today.
I don't know if you could say the same thing about Slash.

Honestly,i'm not saying slalsh is a monster technique wise ,but he does have more technical ability lead wise than hendrix did .Everything else goes to jimi by a landslide.

You really can't compare the two of them equally.
First of all, Slash doesn't sing while playing rhythm and Lead guitar.
Second, Slash and Axl Rose both rely on each other for any magic to happen from either of them, thus far.....
Third, Slash doesn't have a long list of incredible Artists who have done cover versions to his 27 + years playing guitar (Hendrix only lived 27 years).
Forth, Slash made his best accomplishments as a Band member (GNR) and refers to Jimi Hendrix as one of his influences getting there......
Slash is a great comeback artist and seems to get some recognition to everything he's involved with, although it proves He's not satisfied with them after knocking on Axl's front door at 5 am, not long ago.
That's what happens when you have an "Appetite for Destruction"...

Jimi Hendrix was a solo artist who's short career reached out and touched multitudes....... Fender owes more to Hendrix for the Stratocaster becoming the biggest selling electric guitar in history..... So many converted to it from his influence.
Jimi's song "Little Wing" is a masterpiece, sounding as if two guitar parts are being played through one as he sings lyrics while playing it.
Many greats have covered an interpretation it's innovative brilliance, including SRV and still created it's magical presence without the difficulty of including lyrics.
It's not fair comparing the two.....

You're right, though.

Slash is a great guitarist with an extemely recognisable style.... but Hendrix wins hands down. You also have to remember that Hendrix had very basic gear by todays standards, so his sound may be more raw but his abilities and originality for the time were way ahead of the curve. Slash is a good guitar player but he is no virtuoso, unlike Hendrix who inspired many modern greats including Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen.

If you want my opinion, I choose Hendrix, but nowadays a lot of people have heard of Slash more, since he was in Guitar Hero 3 and one of their songs was in the second one, too. I choose Hendrix because he made a huge breakthrough in rock n' roll, music, and blues. If ya' ask me, Slash propbably got a lot of his style from Hendrix.

Can someone please tell me what the big deal about slash is? Honestly I don't see it. He was a pretty straight up rock guitarist. Yeah he is pretty good at playing but I personally have never heard him do anything incredibly impressive (compared to most of the virtuoso players out there) and as far as I can tell he never did anything that groundbreaking. I think GNR is a really solid rock band but they never blew the top off anything innovation wise. The reasons they seem to have been popular originally are that Axle is crazy and slash wears a big hat and they were a badass straight forward rock band in a time when gaudy glam rock was king. They were the perfect alternative to all that crap for everyone who wasn't comfortable liking music made by guys dressed up like female hookers. Don't get me wrong I love Motely Crew videos, it doesn't get much better than that.

GNR was a great rock band and they wrote some pretty good songs, but Slash isn't (obviously) not that great when that particular chemistry isn't in play.

This has all been said I guess, but still. I don't get why I keep meeting people who think slash is a genius or deserves the same reverence as the true gods of music.
