You have probably heard that the Science and Technology Research Council
(STFC) has had a funding cut. You can learn more at, for

This was an unwanted Christmas present for all physics departments,
including
Manchester. While it may not affect you while you are here, it will impact
future generations of undergraduates. Those of you planning
research careers in astronomy, nuclear or particle physics have a direct
interest in getting these cuts reversed as soon as possible.
So please sign the Downing Street petition against the decision
(it's at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Physics-Funding/ ) and encourage as
many as possible of your friends and family as well. Already over
12,000 people
have signed including Stephen Hawking, Peter Higgs and of course many staff
from this department.
