i've been playing guitar for around 3-4 years now and desperatly need a new amp. some people seem to say marshalls are crap so say they are awesome some say that laneys are good etc... what would be the best buy for an amp around $600-700 US for a 100 watt amp?

I own a pair of Ampegs, a VT-22 120 Watt 2x12 combo, and a VT-40 60 Watt 4x10 combo. If you must go the traditional route, I'd put either of these old babies against anything available new.

I've been now-and-again working on a project to build a 5 Watt single-tube power amp for my rig. For someone about to blow $600-$700 US dollars on an amp, I suggest this is a much better way to go.

I know that sounds all wrong, at first, but take the time to read through the posts and links from this thread in Tech Talk.

With that kind of money, you could get a really nice small amp that you can take anywhere, and get the same tone every time. You should still have enough left over to get a honkin' big PA amp to boost your sound (as part of the mix) to any level you want.

With your price range and experience I would suggest looking into amp modelers like Line6 Spider 212 or Crate makes some that are also 100+ watts. They are extremely versitile and you can get tons of different tones. Great for when you want to change directions or go for a different style at the press of a button. Just check em out. I have a Spider 212 which I've done some live stuff with, it has been very trustworthy and I can change sounds-effects all with my floor board. I get raves about my tones they are really very professional sounding. Good Luck with your search.

Take a look at the Rocktron Rampage series amps. They are very under rated in my opinion. I was completely blown away by not only their sound but the available effects that come built into some of the amps.

They are so clean that turned all the way up with the overdrive enabled they have almost zero noise.

I have owned Fender, Music Man, Marshall, Pevey (well i'm allowed one mistake), and even have an old Silvertone, but the Rocktron just blew them all away.

I will never get rid of my old Music Man tube head though. I just can't seem to part with it.

Anyway, check out the Rocktron stuff and decide for yourself.
