Hey,

I have a 1962 reissue American Fender Stratocaster and I am a huge blues fan. Stevie Ray Vaughan is practically my God, to spell it out. Anyway, I'm in the amp market and I was wondering what might be a good choice for me, so I can limit my shopping time and get down to some playing.

I don't have a huge budget, probably around $700 (that's in Australian dollars, mind you) max. I'm after something I can use to practice with at home, and also do small sized gigs with.

I read the pdf thing on choice of amps, and it was really helpful, but I was just after some more detailed advice based on my guitar and music style.

Thanks for your help.

Just an alternate suggestion, but if you can't afford the real thing like a classic amp that SRV used etc..., you might try getting a small combo amp and a decent effects processor with amp emulators built in.
For instance, with a small amp and a Boss GT-8 you could get just about any sound you want including pretty good simulations of all the classic amps like Vox, Mesa/boogie, Marshall, Twin Reverbs etc... as well as any sized speaker combination and even pickup simulations..ie, single pole to humbucker etc..... not to mention the thousands of other effects you get with it too.

I don't remember the model name, but Epiphone (go figure!) has a small tube amp out now that is getting good reviews from tone-questers.

If you're into blues, you do not want one of those new-fangled modelling gizmos! It's not about how fast you can play, or how many wierd noises you can make: tone counts!

Hi,

I bought mine new around 1978 for less than $300 US, then. Mine is a silver face. I play with it at home. I purchased it at a music store with a good reputation that mostly catered to high school band students, not just the guys with guitars. The owner there told me if I ever got myself up to doing gigs like to church or small clubs this amp would do it. It has a pull "power boost" that just wails at home. I never crank it up unless I'm home alone. My usual setting at home is 3 or 4 volume control, not power-boost. From some of the club, blues bands I've heard, this amp is a pee-wee in comparrison to the monsters they use.

I'm not much of a metal-head but I do like SRV and have a few Hal Leonard books that mirror his music. I'm not that good; maybe someday I may get close. My amp experience is close to nil compared to most here, but thought I'd drop some links.

I guess this amp is only available used.

My amp probably needs new guts as it has set a bit and the electolytics have probably leaked some. Buddy of mine much into the gig scene upgraded his amp for about a $100. Mine still sounds good to me. I guess ignorance has its advantages ;)

I mate it with a Boss ME-50 effects box and my recently purchased new Les Paul electric.

Don't know if this is the current list, just an example of an amp similar to mine. This Eric is not me:

Mine is a tube amp and not for sale, I'm keeping it.
