I use my middle finger to tap single notes, but as Elklandercc says, tapping multiple notes with your picking hand can mean using multiple fingers.

Callouses will take time to develop, just as they do on your fretting hand.... it'll ease if it's a technique you start to use more....

You also don't need much of a callous to keep the pain away from pinky tapping.

when I play eruption, I use my index finger. I cant use my pinky.

"No Stairway?!?" I was actually trying out a Valaveking at Guitar Center the other day and I was doing 3 string arps going up the neck, and one of the dudes walked over and said no sweep picking on saturdays with a laugh. They were clean and quick, so I hope he didn't imply they sounded like ****.
