OK your right steve vai has nothing to do with this site. But why compair? Just admire what each has done. I myself dont care who's better. their both great players. But Randy played with emotion. Not anything else. jack7

Personally - (and this is my preference!) I'd prefer Joe. Now, I'd also say that Steve could smoke Joe out of the water in most cases -- but, here's the most important bit, here you have two very, very talented guitarist, musicians and what-not, but you also have two guys who respect and admire each other and each other's work! My point is you often see these two as rivals, "Is Satch better than Vai, is Steve better than Joe?..." But in reality, here you have two of the closest friend ever. Their respect and mutual admiration is something I think we can all learn from - it's not about who's better, it about feeling something from and in the music!!!
There's my two pence...

Its understanding how music works, how it fits together, different keys, harmonising and many other things both more complex and more simple...

is that i think all u van halen lovers never even gave rhoads a chance so for all u people who say van halen is
better than rhoads explain your thoughts:

Well, I believe that it is like this. A drastic analogy would be to compare Chuck Berry(van Halen) with Andre Segovia(Rhoads). Segovia is obviously a much more thought out player but Berry is and has a natural charismatic gift that only comes from god. Despite Segovias technique and musical genious, we are in fact talking about rock n roll here and it is traditionally played with the groin not the brain.

Zakk Wylde is currently Ozzy's guitarist. He's had three guitarists in his solo career, Randy Rhoads, Jake Lee, and Zakk Wylde. There is a difference between Rhoads and Wylde in their style and tone. Rhoads tends to be a lot more classically influenced. Whereas Zakk,(i;m pretty sure) uses pentatonics. You really gotta listen to the songs in order to tell the difference.
To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense. After three years of playing I tried to play everything as fast as possible and that sounded, I would say, like shit, and I didn't realize that if I'd play bit slower things than I was capable of playing then everything would sound much better.
