As a start - your fingers... If memory serves correctlly Billy Gibbons uses a peso... being as picks are very cheap, you''re probably better off buying some...

And, welcome to GT.... :)

There was an article I read once where people made their own picks out of old credit cards they were going to throw out. I did it and the 'pick' was actually quite nice. Worked out well. Of course, I lost it. Can't hang on to a pick to save my life.... :D

I go w/ either quarters and/or my fingers when picks aren't available. Fingers can get you a better tone than using a pick I think, but its harder, and not easy to master. Works great for like slow blues stuff or funky chunking of chords. The quarters on the other hand give this great tone, although thinner or more metallic sounding than a pick, its very different. Billy Gibbons sounding I guess. It can be uber rough on strings though. I'd start fingerpicking just cuz it's very handy when you lose your pick or when dumb friends don't have any, and the tone is a definite plus. Go buy some picks though. And you know what, if you hang with enough musicians you're bound to find dozens of them lying on the floor anyways.

I've bought picks only 3 times since 1992. I'll buy 'em in a gross though (144). So that purchase will last me literally years, and I won't fret as much about losing them.

Using things other than a pick will work but your technique might become used to it if you keep doing it. Then you might feel stuck with it, and throwing quarters to the crowd costs more than a pick ;)

Yeah, I will say after using quarters, nothing but uber stiff picks will suffice. This is not a bad thing however. I have been using a soft one until it recently broke, and no technical habits have emerged as problems, although it leaves me with a burning desire for harder picks.

Use a quarter.....to go down to the store and buy a pick. They are really cheap, so just buy a few packs at a time and you won't have to worry about running out.

I live next to a music shop so I have thousands of picks laying around my house. I say just buy a pick if there is a shop that sells them buy you. picks most of the time cost $.25-$1.25 so their not that price racking. If you play the acoustic guitar you could just play finger style. When I play the guitar I'm travis picking (I kind of finger style) half the time.
