how quikly you can play ios dependant on three things, how fast your fretting hand casn play, how fast your picking hand can play, and co-ordination between the two.

there are two things affecting how quikly you can fret or pick; how far u have to move the pick and how quikly your hand moves.

i shall talk abou the picking (right) hand. you want to move your hand as little as possible to make the note. this can first be helped by getting a thick pick as it bends less and is therefore able to make smaller motions to pluck the string. also only letting a small part of the pick show will also speed you up as it will flex less. futher more try to make your picking motions as small as possible. this can be done by picking by moving your wrist instead of picking by moving your elbow. as your wrist movements can be far more acurate.

next is how fast you move your hand.the first thing to say about this is relax. if you are tense the contractor and extensor muscles act against each other, slowing each other down. its like trying to accelerate with your foot on the brake. this is a hard thing to do as you will probably find as you speed up u tense up. what i advize is play as fast as you can relaxed. just pick the same note over and over. a good idea is watch tv whilst doin this. it makes it less boarin and as you are watching tv u should be relaxed. again picking from the wrist is advized as moving your hand up and down takes less force than moving your hand and your forearm.

note when picking from the wrist use the elbow joint to move the pick to watever string you are picking and use the wrist tio actually pick.

this should help you pick faster. but again all you can do is practice pratice practice. use a metronome and practice just below the speed you tense up, then slowly push the speed trying to stay relaxed.

if the problem is with the fretting left hand, or coordinating the two hands, just ask.

Heck man, I just want to play well. I could care less about fast. But then I'm old...I don't do much of anything fast anymore... :D

yes.... it's easier to pick fast with a thicker pick - less (or no) flex.

Like the others are saying, it's all practice dude...

It's a good thing you are so young. You probably have more leisure time at your disposal to put in the necessary practice time in order to "play fast".

I did a few tutorials on speed building:
http://www.guitartricks.com/tutorial.php?input=213
http://www.guitartricks.com/tutorial.php?input=287
http://www.guitartricks.com/tutorial.php?input=211

And the amount you will have to practice is exactly what all the other GT people have replied: a lot. An awful lot.

In the long run most of playing fast is much easier than many people imagine, it simply comes down to putting in the time to do it right. :) Happy playing.

I have a question about wrist picking that did not occur to me untill today:

I do use my elbow to position my hand, then alternate pick on whichever string, but is the wrist actually moving? For example, I held my right arm with my left hand and tried to move my wrist. I found that my right wrist actually cannot move fast at all, rather when my wrist moves normally my forearm rotates. My elbow does not move at all, yet the arm rotates. Is that normal?

also, I found when practicing left handed motions, that if I practiced dead stopped at each position in an excersize and move each finger to its next location (buffering, if you will) that I could up my speed very quickly, maxing out in as little as a couple days. This works fine when economy picking, but when I do alternate picking, the timing gets all screwed up. What should I do in general to increase left handed speed?

This also leads me to believe that maybe theres a problem with my alternate picking, so I looked closely and found that my 3-fingered grip limits my picking angle to nilch. While this is comfortable and gives a very clean sound, building speed with it is almost impossible.

that last one is what caused me to give up for the day, as I put in at least 8 hours yesterday and 10 the day before. Sorry for the bad grammar, but im a tad frustrated at the moment ; D I found that eliminating tension goes a long way, but only took me so far

any help is greatly appreciated

You just gotta practice man. As for your picking and motions... you should pick with your wrist and manuever (sp?) with your arm. You'll build up tension because you are going fast and your hand/arm is not used to it. Once you build up strength and strech out your wrist ( I geuss you can say thats what happens) you'll be able to pick fast in longer durations, and build up speed beyond that. Also, don't forget about alternate palm mutting picking. I can be harder than regular alternate picking at first, but once you get used to it, its as cake as alternate picking.

you could try tapping, there are lessons here but if you really want to get fast, practice scales... which can also be found here. and just practice slow first, use a metronome, and every day increase the metronomes speed, pretty soon youll be flyin!
