Old guy really, just recently retired from working in the sugar cane fields all my life, always wanted to play blues and rock, with Stevie Ray, and Jimi, and ZZ as my heroes, maybe now I'll put in the time and really make it happen. Strats are my favorite, have collected quite a few over the many years, with a custom shop book matched flame top being the favorite there, and some nice fender amps. Blackface super reverb, Blues Deville, and most lately a cyber-twin. Although it's not a tube amp (which I love), I'm amazed at the versitility with which it can simulate so many different amps. Oh, and my oldest buddy, a dusty beatup vibro-champ that still puts out a real nice funky tone....
Now if I can just get them calluses built up.....
Aloha

You won't go wrong. This is truly a beautiful spot, but it is rapidly getting overbuilt. Be sure to try to book a nite or two in Hana if you can and spend some time just walking and sitting, and taking it all in. Although it is changing too, it is still pretty much the old style Hawaii, with some really accomplished slack key guitar players out there. At family gatherings out there, these guys come out of the woodwork that you never heard of before, and just blow you away with their playing! I think they must just sit up in the woods where nobody can see them and grow their 'erbs and practice all the time!

Living on Maui was a pretty quiet deal in the early days (daze?) if you were actually working full time, raising a family, and paying off a mortgage. It left little time for anything else. The wife and I did make a couple of trips over to Honolulu to see good concerts, but that kind of travel was expensive and we couldn't do that very often.

We did get over to see Van Halen once, and we got seats up front pretty close to the stage. During the break, Eddie came down to the edge of the stage and sat down with his feet hanging over the end of the stage and just yakked with the crowd. He had his ax with him, plugged in, and was just noodeling around on it as he yakked, until someone asked him about his classical music training he reportedly had from his mom in his younger years. He launched into some amazing classical riffs and just blew everybody away.....

Another time, someone was filming a movie on Maui called "Rainbow Bridge", with Jimi Hendrix in it. They wanted to film a "hippie concert in the woods" scene, and I heard about it from some friends. So the wife and I put on our best tie-dies and bell bottoms, grabbed some good wine and 'erb, and walked up to the movie location in the woods. They had a big gen set running in a nearby gulch, and a big stage setup in the middle of a cow pasture. There was a huge crowd of folks there dressed appropriately, like a jr version of Woodstock! Jimi and his crew came out and jammed for over an hour as the film crews cranked off a lot of footage. We were able to get up pretty close to the stage and take it all in. This was not long before Jimi died.

Just wanted to share a couple of the major guitar highlights in my life that I will never forget. I have a copy of that movie and play it every once in awhile, particularly the "concert" scenes, it brings back all kinds of great memories.......

Welcome dude. Those are some pretty sweet once in a lifetime moments.

Mine are about to come; Rush in September, and hopefully Dream Theater in August.

Dude HEEEELLLLL yeah those are great stories. We have some friends on Oahu and we've been there a few times before, but we've never had the opportunity to see the other islands. We're VERY excited. We're actually going to fly into Maui this time. Welcome again!

Just the other day I was thinking to myself how I hadn't seen anyone from HI post here, despite being such an inspiring setting which likely spawns many passionate players. And now here ya are...interestingly they call that the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon. Welcome to the site! :)

Ahhhh Paradise. Is it still paradise when you live there your whole life???? I'm sure it was seeing Jimi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a highlight!!!!!!! I just returned from a seminar held at your local Sherwin Williams a couple of weeks ago. They carry my products there.
One of my highlights was driving Bill Ward to a local Pet Store here in Huntington Beach, CA, so he could buy a Rat to feed his snake. Then we returned to his place, tossed in the Rat and jammed together for about two hours. Great Drummer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had a blast. He moved about three weeks later and gave his Boa to my buddy who lived next door. Good Times.................
