I'd heard about the first shooting, and like Kev got a bit confused by reports later. People blame the gun laws, but then we had a similar incident at Dunblane here, and have fewer guns in circulation. The cops just standing there seemed inappropriate. Glad to hear the GT locals are OK.

I'm not sure about the reports that it was some crazy jealousy thing - the guns all had the serials filed off....

Crazy, crazy world.... :(

This is a very difficult thing to wrap your mind around. How can one person, one totally demented person, cause so much pain, horror and death over something so ... so ... insignifigant? I too am glad that all of our local GT folks are okay but my heart, and yours I'm sure, goes out to the families and fellow students of those lost to this lunatic.

What could possibly have been going through this 'person's' (and believe me, I use this term so very loosely) mind that would cause an action like this? How can you make that leap from personal anquish to mass killer? From what we can assume was a functional human being to a mad-dog?

I agree with what has been said here; you never know what the future holds. Live now. Don't wait. Love deeply. Live fully. Be the person you are meant to be and live each day like it's your last. One day, you'll be right.

God bless all those affected by this horror. I suspect that's all of us.

Well, the media here are busy talking about how the dude wasn't a US national, and was asian... so some sort of racism/immigration rant is probably on the cards....

They'll be busier trying to blame the uni/cops for 'letting' the guy get to the second building to kill 31 when he'd left the first building having killed 2 I imagine.

I would think the question why people do these things is unanswerable....

Oh yeah, just wait for the racist commentary to start - hello ... he was mentally unstable and violent ...that's not something particular to a specific race of people. That's a individual thing. Also, just wait and see the civil suits that are coming against the university and the security people. I can't see where they are going to have much of a defense.

No one knows why or how people make that jump from rational to insane. :(

well, the BBC are now 'suggesting' that the 2 incidents may not be linked.... apparently fella in the main incident was 23 and had lost his girlfriend...

It doesn't actually matter why.... there is no justification. Sadly it won't be the last time we see something like this. Schools are ridiculously easy targets...

If that were the reason, this sort of thing would happen all the time, God forbid. No. There is something much more insidious at work here. Something shorted out in his brain. Some little circuit board fried up. I am sorry that he offed himself though since now he doesn't have to answer for his animal behavior!

Yeah, I know. Just wait. You know some pinhead somewhere is going to try and make this argument. You just know it. The world is filled with half-wits, ninnies and nincompoops. Every time I hear that sort of thing I have to wonder how they manage to get out of the house every morning.

I think this is awful... That's the scary thing with mental illness... people who suffer from it can seem ok for a long time and then just fall over the edge. Its quite scary actually. I don't know if this guy had mental illness or not, but I just can't beleive that someone could consciously do something like that and not be sick.

People struggle with this stuff everyday... getting urges to hurt themselves or other people, and think nothing of it.. its something they would never act on... and then one day... they can't take it anymore. I find it really terrifying that so many people have depression or other mental illnesses and people don't take it seriously.

I knew a guy once who was the nicest guy you would ever want to meet.. The type of guy that would give you the shirt off of his back.. and then he was going through a divorce and snapped... tide his 20 month old son around his chest with a house coat tie and a brick to his ankle and jumped into a swimming hole.

Everytime something like this happens, I think about him. I pray for all the families, even the shooter's.. What they must be going through. Truly Sad.

I thought so. But you know, stranger things have happened. I remember once in high school, this one kid was picked on a lot by jocks and he was picked up for bringing a knife into school. Not the same thing, I know, but I don't think it would have taken much for him to stick somebody.

Once you get to college there's really no such thing as "jocks"/"cool kids." There's mostly "people you like," "people you don't like," and "people to whom you feel indifferent."

I just found out that one of the scientists that my company had worked with on occassion, left Nova Scotia to do some work with Virginia Tech. His wife was a French teacher there.. and unfortunately she was one of the teachers killed yesterday.

Apparently she had tried to stop the shooter from entering her classroom and he shot her. Her name was Jocelyne Nowak.

Jeez...that's terrible. Sorry to hear that. This whole thing continues to boggle the mind and tear at the heart.

It sucks clearly. I hate how politics are already getting involved into the situation and the media is exploiting it. That is just reality I suppose. I mean this is the second "close to home" situation I had to deal with this school year. Earlier two kids were shot by their father in the Shepherd parking lot.

I'm not all about gun control, I'm kind of go back and forth on the issue. This is irrelevant, but one can buy ammunition with a background check (or so I heard on msnbc when they were talking about the guy's ability to buy a gun). I think that ammunition law is just asking for black market of guns. What do I know though.

I also hate the fact that school security is going to be brought into this issue. I already have to swipe a card key, unlock main doors, then unlock my dorm room door to get in. It is kind of ridiculous. They could do the same with classes I suppose, but that'd be a bit hetic and pointless. There is no way you can prevent nut jobs from tripping out sometimes.

Yea, I hate it when the media runs in along with the cops in instances like these. Sure, they're sad about what happened, but they're more concerned about "their story." If I was ever apporached my the media after something like this happened, God forbid, I would seriously freak the **** out.

I see that Christian anti-videogame douch is starting with his bullcrap. I play a lot of violent video games, but I haven't raised my fist since I was 9.
