okay, i've known this song for years, or so i thought.. my friend taught me smoke on the water like 4 years ago, and i was looking on here, it's differnt.

E |---------------------------------------------------|
B |---------------------------------------------------|
G |---------------------------------------------------|
D |---------------------------------------------------|
A |---------------------------------------------------|
E |---0--3--5--0--3--5--5--0--3--5--3--0-------------

This is the tab for how I play it, is this wrong?

(i'm still new to tabs, so i'm not sure if this is right)

First thing, you may want to try to post this in the appropriate forum. It will be moved, but just for future reference.

Secondly, Smoke On The Water is just power chords:

E--------------------------------
B--------------------------------
G--------------------------------
D--2-5-7--2-5-8-7--2-5-7--5-2
A--2-5-7--2-5-8-7--2-5-7--5-2
E--0-3-5--0-3-6-5--0-3-5--3-0

I thought "whatever you want" meant whatever I want.

I don't mean to sound like a dick, but where else would this be posted?

Whatever you want seems to mean not pertaining to guitar. It may be moved to Guitar Basics. Thats why theres guitar forums and Open Discussion. :)

I was probably wrong. I never actually played along with it or looked at a tab.

I have a tab from way back that says to play it like this:

e-----------------------------------------------|
b-----------------------------------------------|
g-----------------------------------------------|
d--5--8--10---5--8--11--10---5--8--10---8--5--|
a--5--8--10---5--8--11--10---5--8--10---8--5--|
E-----------------------------------------------|

EDIT: Bluagh, I just noticed that this works out to the same thing as Elklander said.

It kinda depends on how you look at it.
I'd always played it using power chords until just recently.
The reason I wrote the tab the way it is, is cause I saw an airing of "Behind the Music" where it specifically mentions Smoke on the Water and how the chords were played on the album.

The first tab in this thread is also correct except that it's been changed from the key of G down to E and it's played on just one string to make it easier for beginners.

I agree with grizlymint, power chords are the most effective way to play that song, cause it gives it more emotion...I havn't played that song since i first started playing guitar, lol, still sounds really cool.

Once you can play Smoke on the Water power chord style try moving on to Rainbow in the Dark by Dio. It's quite similar you'll find.
