Yup....if you want a decent beginner guitar, go for a Squire. HOWEVER, spending more now can go a looooooong way. I started playing guitar in 5th grade. I had the regular beginner acoustic, then around 7th-8th grade it was time for me to buy an electric. I spent the $500 something (always on sale at Guitar Center) and got a Fender Strat (AMERICAN, they wanted to try and sell me a Mexican one for cheaper....no thank you). Anyways, 8 years later, and I'm still using the exact same guitar. Either spend more now, or a lot more later basically. If your not sure if your going to stick with guitar, go for the cheaper one. If your possitive your going to continue with it, might as well get a good one now and not have to worry about upgrading later.

I recommend going with a cheaper (100 USD or so) guitar like the Squire strat for now... Most people's taste in music will change pretty drastically when they get into play electric guitar and spending a lot of money on a guitar now would be a big investment... considering you could end up wanting something completely different.
Usually the two main guitar people start on are the Epiphone Special II or the Squire Strat... Both are good beginner guitars, however, I am partial to the Strat as well.

And on the subject of future upgrades.... if you're still playing in a couple of years, you'll be wanting an excuse to buy more guitars anyway.... :D

Along with that
The fact of the matter is... if you spend 500 dollars now... you're still going to want to get a new guitar in a few years anyway. So, it's not really worth it at the moment, especially since you're not beyond a beginner level.

Get the cheapest thing that gets an okay tone.
Shoot, use a first act guitar! Hit up the pawn shops!
The idea is that if you get a very limited instrument to hone your chops on and get good with---you'll find out over the course of learning what the instrument's limitations are and what you wish it could do.
Armed with this knowledge--and with guitar-store ready chops--you'll know exactly what kind of 'pro' guitar you want to get when you upgrade.
