I recommend going with a cheaper (100 USD or so) guitar like the Squire strat for now... Most people's taste in music will change pretty drastically when they get into play electric guitar and spending a lot of money on a guitar now would be a big investment... considering you could end up wanting something completely different.

Usually the two main guitar people start on are the Epiphone Special II or the Squire Strat... Both are good beginner guitars, however, I am partial to the Strat as well.
