Without more info I can only guess. I assume this is in a song tab. So I would say it means: note on 10th fret then Muted note then note on 12th fret.

I don't recall ever seeing a * in a tablature but usually they provide an explanation chart at the end of the tablature or if it came from a site, there's usually a page where they explain each character used.

guessing here i would say it means bend the note at the 10th fret to the pitch of the note at the 12th fret

Can you post a link to the tab (if its online) so we can help you better?

From the information you gave, it could be a lot of things. My first guess is that its a bend. It could be anything really....hammer on, slide, mute, ect. What song is that from?

Maybe... it may sound stupid, but what if it means it's your choice on what you do to go up to the next note? Ya know how the * is considered a "wildcard"?
It might just be true!
no matter what, you're going up to the next note anyway.
Depending of how fast the part is, it might not make a difference.
please correct me if i'm wrong though.

That COULD be true, but I don't think so. Only because something in the back of my mind tells me Ive seen that in a tab before. Keep in mind, if your typing out tabs, you don't really have a whole lot of choices with how to represent things. You cant really make a "bend" arrow on your keyboard. Also, if what your saying were true, it would be very dependant on the speed of the song like you said. There is a clear difference in bending, sliding, hammering, ect, but the faster you play, the more they can blend into each other.
Edit: are my eyes just being wierd, or are the letters in your post blue? I can't tell the difference too well right now lol

SYMBOLS:
- Asterisk (*) = new measure, play same chord
- Period (.) = 1/8 note rest at start of a measure
- Underline(_) = sustain note into next measure
I found this on google. (could help) unless it was song specific.
;)
and yeah, they areBLUE :D
