Maybe... it may sound stupid, but what if it means it's your choice on what you do to go up to the next note? Ya know how the * is considered a "wildcard"?

It might just be true!

no matter what, you're going up to the next note anyway.
Depending of how fast the part is, it might not make a difference.

please correct me if i'm wrong though.
