Hey guys how are yah

I just bought an electric guitar, and i truly am dumb founded. Honestly i will learn therefore i will be here often.

I have just been going all over the site and looking at the different songs. I just have a simple question. What is the significance of the 0 i thought frets started from 1-19 then what is the ZERO all about. any help would be much appreciated.
oh btw if anyone can suggest what is the best way for me to gradually become better through this site i would very much appreciate it. Should i learn to read music or what exercises i should do along those lines.
anyways tc

First of all... wellcome abord bro, this is a fine place to be.

Second... if you are starting and have doubts... no reason to wait to start posting... we are here to help each other and learn... don't be shy...ask, ask, ask.

Third... I don't get pretty clear your fret zero question... but I guess Is open strings (played without fretting) ooooorr, means in the tab a "don't play this string" mark...

Any way wellcome and hope to se ya round more.

Rock on bro

Welcome to the site.
And yes, a 0 in tab just means an open string. I've never seen where they indicate not to play a string...why not just leave it blank? However, sometimes you may see an X on a string, which would mean to pick the string muted for the percussive raked sound.

Hey man, good to have you here. Plenty of good people here to help you through along the way. Its tough, especially at first, but most people I know who has learned to play is obsessed and I'm sure they're glad the did it.

I'd suggest starting with the beginners section that describes tabs and fingering positions first.

http://www.guitartricks.com/beginners.php

Then if you don't understand something, post a link to the lesson and ask either in the Forum area or write to the instructor.
A lot of the information is explained in the instructor pages.

Welcome to the site. Pretty much any question you have can get answered here. Yeah, I'm assuming that you're talking about tabs...if so, then the zero would just mean pluck the string without holding down any frets. They call that playing an "open string."
You go outside and practice screaming. We'll play music while you're gone.

If you did it in that order the problem coud be the string you started with the standat tunnig should be:

E string 1 (lighter one)
B string 2
G string 3
D string 4
A string 5
E string 6 (heavier one)

Just check that for start if you still have troubles... post again.

Rock on bro.

What do you mean when you say the sound is different? Is the pitch different, or do you mean that there's a buzzing sound or something like that?

...or by sounds different do you just mean it has a totally different tone?

if thats the case, youve got to factor in your guitar settings, etc. which is a whole lesson in itself.
