Hello, as a sweeping excercise, I'm learning the intro sweeps to dream theater's "the glass prison". Here's how I pick it now:

d u u u d d
-19-14-----------14-----------
--------15----15-------------
-----------16----------------
-----------------------------
------------------------------
-------------------------------

Just making sure I'm picking this the most efficient way before i spend hours learning this stuff.

Thanks in advance.

If it was me, I'd pick the 19 and then pull-off to 14 rather than picking again - so mine would be uuudd. If you want to pick all the notes, then yes what you have written is the most economical way...

Im having a really hard time with sweep picking right now mainly because I don't know how to pick the strings with my right hand. Is there a certain patter I should follow, or is it all based on what feels best?

For example: In this sweep, I would also do a pull off, but I would go uuddd. Im not good at sweeping, so I cant say this works or not.

Thanks for the tip ren...Just checking that's it economical before i run through it a bagillion times :D. The reason I picked this as an excercise is cause every note is picked.

Hunter: Sweeping takes a friggen long time. With the right hand, don't pick the strings on a sweep, do more of a sweeping motion so you hit them all in one motion instead of picking each one seperately. I know this is about as clear as mud, but there's plenty on sweeping, just search the forum.

Does Petrucci sweep those arpeggios usually? It's just that on the Gigantour DVD, he looked like he was playing them with super-fast alternate-picking...

Actually Ben, I checked it out on the petrucci forums. He does alternate pick it. I just assumed it was sweep arpeggios, which i think is a fair assumption.

I also read, however that he sweeps them lives sometimes cause portnoy speeds up too much (I can definately sympathise with trooch on this one ;) ).

Yep, He did a lesson for GW a few moths back, and one part was alternate picking arpeggios.
