I'm trying to play some michael romeo licks (from symphony x) licks

Problem is that with legato's that span more than 4-5 frets is giving me alot of trouble -

Is there any techniques to improve my legato technique when playing scales such as A harmonic minor?

one lick giving me trouble with legato is

-
--------------------------------9-10-
-------------------------7-9-10-----
----------------6-7-9-10------------
-------3-5-7-8----------------------
-4-5-7------------------------------

thanks in advance for any help

i would do it with some slides

like so

-
---------------------------------------------9--10-
-----------------------------------7--9--10-----
----------------------6--7--9--10------------
----------3--5--7--8----------------------
-4--5--7------------------------------
1 3 4 1 2 4(\)4 1 2 4(\)4 1 3 4 3 4

numbers at bottom are which finger to use 1 being the finger nearest the thumb and 4 being the little finger. the (\) is a slide.

also if u change on which string one note is played you get this much more manageable run

-
---------------------------------------------9--10-
-----------------------------------7--9--10-----
-----------------------6--7--9--10------------
--------------5--7--8----------------------
-4--5--7---8----------------------------
1 3 4(\)4 1 3 4 1 2 4(\)4 1 3 4 3 4

actually with legato - i hit the string once and hammer on all the notes on a string - when i go 3-5-7-8 if were to slide to the last 8 then i loose the note after the 7. So far only lots of distortion helps and reminds me of some lengthy tapping techniques required by the left hand - thanks for the tips tho.

um i dont quite understand what you mean...

the reason i suggested a slide was becausegoning from the 7 to 8 there are no imbertween frets so sliding from one to another is pretty much the same as hammerin.

i was suggestin 3h5h7s8.

if you wanted to u could so 3h5h7h8, but this puts strain because you have to use all four fingers and there is the akward jump in the middle, beween the 5 and 7.

i would really advize doin it with little distortion better to get your teqnique up to scratch instead of rellying on effects.

i am assuming you are having a problem makin the notes loud enough if u need distortion to make it work well. all i can then suggest is just practice hammers and pull offs more to build strength. you could ban yourself from using the pick for one day, thats what i used to do.

the only other thing i can suggest 3h5h7t8 its a bit weird, but it would work.

the dotted lines represent the 6 strings of the guitar. the bottom one being the low e string and the top one being the high e string.

the numbers on the lines are the frets that you are playing. so a five and the bottom line is playing the 5th fret of the low e string which is the note a.

its called tab. v easy to use
