um i am sorry i dont quite understand the question. are you sayin you have trouble going from alternate picking to sweep/econimy picking?

or that you dont like alternate picking over many strings?

I think the up/down strokes it gives in the exercise are a good guideline. The whole exercise is an arpeggio..so you will be ''arpeggiating'' it when you play regardless of how you pick it.

I would go with what the exercise states, but also practice the exercise with all up or downstrokes in order to strengthen your muscle memory and improve your general picking.

Yeah i still can't arpegiate it - i'm know its one note a string + string skipping so the arpegio shouldn't be tough but its messing me up a tonne.

I know i drop from 5 to 7 then but do again downstroke the 8 and skip a string and hit the next 7?

Also I have a new problem now ...

i need to arppegiate the following ... how do i even begin to arp this ?
for every pair on a string do i hammer on / pull off to nail the sweep effect?

just alternate pick it all. thats what i would do. you really want to get your alternate picking very good. things like econimy pickking and sweeping only work well in my opinion if they are built on a strong alt picking base.

you should only ever need to sweep somethin if it has three or more notes on different strings in a row tat are next to each other.

like

---2----
--4-----
-3------
--------
--------
--------

and even then you can get away with alternating three strings i find.

more than three is pretty tricky.

edit ; didnt notice the three string sweeps , you could swwep those, its up to you. i would streess get your alt pickin good before you explore with sweeping and stuff.
