Hi everyone.
I've just discovered this site while looking for guitars. I've just started playing, learning my chords at the moment. I started learning a long time ago, but lost interest when my fingers got sore. I think I'm doing quite well now, seem to be over the worst with my fingers - they're now kinda numb!

At the moment I'm using my dads Martin accoustic, which is making me a bit nervous, so I'm working on getting a cheaper one. I'm getting lessons off my dad, who is a professional, but its nice to find a forum with people to chat with when I get frustrated practicing.

Salutations & felicitations!

There's a (small) fee for access to all of the lessons in that part of the site, but there are plenty of free samples to let you get a taste of what's available. And this forum is free!

Welcome to the mad, crazy scene that is called Guitar Tricks. I hope you'll like it, and us.

welcome to GT.

As far as using your dad's Martin, as long as he doesn't mind, I'd keep using it. Your currently learning and playing through a good guitar, if you get something for yourself that is cheaper, you might just keep it aside and keep on using your dad's cause it sounds better and easier to play on.

My 2 cents.

Thanks for the welcome guys.

elklandercc - My dad has loaned me the Martin indefinately, so I think I will stick with it for a while - its a beautiful guitar with a lovely tone. I think your right, I probably would think a cheaper guitar wasn't so great in comparison.

OR sometimes we like to give each other a hard time.... like this...

Taylor > Martin

haha.

I'm more of a fan of the Taylor tone than the Martin tone... but as I've found out that Taylor and Martin are like the Fender and Gibson of acoustics... If you like one... you usually aren't a big fan of the other.

Thanks everyone

As for the Taylor/ Martin, Fender/ Gibson thing, I would definately choose the Martin (probably cause it what I've got and I'm getting quite attached to it) and Gibson -my dad has a byrdland, its my all time favorite guitar, he had a Lespaul too, that was really good.

Having said that, I've not been playing long, so my opinion is based on their sound alone.

I'm probably gonna start an argument now aren't I?

Nah, people on this site are pretty respective of other peoples opinions and there have been enough arguments on here as well as other forums about tastes in music and gear and they end in a draw because when it comes down to it, it's all about personal preference and opinions. In which everyone is entitled to without judgement.

Your choice of Martin is fine by me, I was just giving you a hard time because I would choose Taylor... and as far as electrics go... I own two Fender Stratocasters... so that one's pretty obvious. haha. Not to take anything away from Gibsons or Martins... they're all well made instruments... they just don't suit my playing style or desired tone.

But it's good that you know what a good guitar sounds like atleast. A lot of people don't find that out until they've been playing for a couple years and can finally afford a nice guitar. haha.
