very nice man.... very nice...

Would you mind me asking what it all cost you in raw materials? Looks really nice with the natural binding, and having been reading your blog over time on progress, it looks to me like you've covered up all the little blips...

Sweet! :D

Nice axe. I like the natural binding... it gives it a nice touch...

I would have went with a different headstock design rather than the traditional Gibson but it's a nice looking axe. You did a great job on the finish... normally that's a tough one for people to get... and the carve top looks great too...

No problem. One of the main reasons I'm doing the blog is to try to help other newbies. Here are the prices (all US $) which are accurate unless stated otherwise:
Neck: 298.00
Body: 365.00
pickups: 140.00
pots, caps etc: not really sure but say 100.00 - that's an overestimate
Bridge/T'pce: 29.00
Tuners: 48.00
Strap Locks: 12.00
Tone Pros studs: 35.00
Wassat : 1027.00

Just for the hell of it I priced LP DC's at Music123. The fadeds are quite inexpensive ( << $1000.00)while the more upmarket ones are about $1650 - 1700.

Hope this helps.

Actually there weren't too many blips on this one, and I certainly won't be pointing them out if I find them. :D
My mate Charlie who used to be a spray painter said the finish is 'more than acceptable' and that he's help me improve it if I wanted. But..why would I mess with it?

Also ...you've hit on an important truth that revealed itself to me...the REAL difference between the big boys & the newbies is that the big boys know how to quickly & easily fix their **** ups!!

Thank you, I appreciate your comments.

Re the finish, early on I practised rubbing out a headstock to gloss to see what happened. I did get a rub through and re dyed it, but it isn't the neck on this one. The SG is the real test piece. LOL!!

The dyeing was done following a tutorial by David Myka and Roger Siminoff's chapter on dyeing in his book on mandolins. And as I said in the blog I was just gob smacked when the flame popped and didn't dare to try to do too much.

What a hunk of junk, throw that in the woodpile, its all its gonna be good for.

Hee hee, gotcha, seriously though, fantastic work. I've been looking at the blogs as you've posted them here and it came out really great. The only thing I don't like about it is the bolt on neck. After you finish the SG, you gonna try a glued neck or a thru-body?

I never really liked bolt on necks though.... My Fernandez 4R 40 has one, though I really like her neck... adjusting the action has been a real pain... probably cause I dont know how to take it off. *sigh*

I could see this debate opening up from day 1. LOL!! I won't go there. I own both Gibsons & Fenders, but for this 'project' I was certain bolt-ons were the appropriate start.

I would have to cost building a neck, but I can't see it coming in under $250.00 and that's not tooling up. I have no plans either way!! :D

We'll see!!
