Hhhmm, I think its mostly a matter of personal preferance. Ive heard if your into a really thick, heavy sound, say in heavy forms of rock and metal, slap some heavy gauged strings on your axe. It'll give your strings a heavier tone.

this is sorta a side question having to do with the same string gauges... i've been wondering... if i get heavier strings will they get lower action than thinner gauges?

you can play faster and bend further on thinner strings. However the thinner the string, the less tone you get.

i understand y bendin would be easier on lighter strings but why would u play faster.

on this note i think i am gonna go to thicker strings on my electric. i banned myself from it for a week and onnly played the acoustic, which has worse action and thicker strings, to build up finger strength. and now i find the electic feelin flimsy.

Although it may be my ears, I can only tell the difference on single coils. My strat / tele have 10s, but all my floyd equipped guitars have 9s...

I don't notice any appreciable difference in tone... and you can play faster with 9s as you expend less energy in moving them... :D

well, Alot of it depends on your pick attack. On some guitars the tone difference won't be as noticable. For me, I'm really not comfortable with strings less than .11 gauge because I have a heavier picking style than most people. Really, just try everthing, .8-.13. and beyond!!!.....

My guitar (godin exit-22) came with 9's and medium/jumbo frets and I couldn't play it without pulling g,b,and e strings sharp. I couldn't even fret the strings down to the fretboard, I had to barely touch them, even after a setup and fret dress to cut the frets down a bit, and a new bone nut (the tech told me jumbo frets are popular with the kids today because of the shred/metal players that are popular that use them). I went to 10's, better, then to 11's which were much better. I guess I have a heavy touch. The tech told me that you can generally go 1-2 sizes up before you start getting fret buzz as the nut is generally cut to accomadate a size or 2 heavier strings. I just got a set of 12's and I hope these will prove to be even better for me. I have also noticed that the 11's tend to stay in tune longer, even when I haven't played for a few days, right out of the case.

Hope this helps, but it's just my experience.
