The more different notes a Bass player is putting into a song - limits the amount of notes a lead guitarist can put into an instrumental, played over the top of it ?

if like he only plays three notes, say c e and g. he could bein c ionion or c lydian or c mixolodian. therefore quite a few possibke notes for the lead line to choose from.

but if the basist played c d e f g b it would be obvious he was in c ionion therefore u could only theoretically play c ionion.

The Bass player won't be playing all those notes at the same time will he? Then you won't be limited to only that scale. Besides, mixture doesn't have to be in every instrument for it to appear in one.

I'd have gone the other way. The short answer is, yes it is true....

The more notes (or probably more appropriately, intervals) that are in use, the more likely it is that what you are playing will clash with what someone else is playing.

In practice, it's unlikely you'll both hit the right/wrong notes at the same time as Jolly says, but it's all about how much you want to have to think. It's things like this that separate the lead playing men from the boys so to speak... not just staying in one position the whole time, but moving around to pick up on different nuances as the underlying chords / bassline / whatever move along. Knowing which intervals are compatible and which sound like nails down a blackboard is a useful skill...

If your bass player sux then you probably will want them to play as few notes as possible. If their really good, and can keep up with the gutiarist, and stay in key while slinging all those notes around you may have the makings for a supergroup.
