Yeah, I'm an astronomy buff.

In this one, a large galaxy is robbing material from a smaller galaxy.

I REALLY hope so.... as I get older I get less impressed by the 'intelligent' life found here...

I have that same pic of the Cat's Eye Nebula as my desktop background. I too, am captivated by the workings of outer space. Beautiful stuff.

Yeah, me too. My new fasicination is with the theory of Dark Matter. This one implies that the universe is not "empty" but is in fact made up of Dark Matter. The only evidence of this is called gravitational lensing. This is where the gravitational pull from a galaxy or large star and even our own Sun warps the space surrounding it and distorts the light from stars behind them. In some instance gravitational lensing doubles or even quadruples the image of quasars. Sometimes it turns the light into arcs instead of a focused point. In the case of our Sun, during an eclipse it bends space in such a way you can see stars that are supposed to be out of sight behind the Sun.

To assume that there isn't life in outer space is ridiculous. Biology as we know it shows us that all you need is a climate similar to ours where bacteria can grow... Somewhere out there... there is a galaxy very similar to ours with a planet just far enough away from its' "Sun" to allow it the perfect climate to grow microorganisms... just like planet Earth. It's a little freaky if you think about it... i just hope we're ahead of them in the technology race... Which leads me to another deep thought.... Normally in movies aliens are portrayed as being technologically more advanced than we are... What if it were the other way around... and a few hundred years from now we explore other galaxies and discover life... but instead of a civilized lifeform it's like human beings during the neanderthal stages.... Pretty crazy stuff....

Annnnnnnnnnd.... I think beer is the most awesome thing that exists... not space... but space is pretty f'n cool too I guess.

But there is also a possibility that in other planets conditions that life can exsist in different means. Whats toxic gas to us could be another worlds clean air and vice versa.

Anybody tried a program called "StarryNight"?
I'd definitely recommend it for anybody into astronomy. The educational material and movies that come with it are really cool.. but the actual program, that lets you fly around the universe, is amazing. You can get a real sense of how big the universe really is by just pointing at a far constellation and telling it to fly you there. The weird thing about it, is it isn't like you'd expect... like Star Trek with all the stars wizzing past you. As soon as you leave our solar system..even though you're still going millions of miles an hour, the stars are mostly still until you begin to get close to them, then one or two will fly past and the rest are still for another couple of minutes.
It's a weird feeling to be able to leave our own constellation and look back at how small we really are.
