I have been trying to think of a way to record my guitar directly on to my computer.

One friend has suggested something called a line 6 GuitarPort. It runs about $140 US and plugs directly into a USB port.

Anyone ever use one of these type of things or one like it?

Anyone have any ideas period?
Andrew

I would say that Line 6 products are excellent for quality recordings made simple, yet I haven't had personal experience with the Guitarport. If that's what you're considering, I might suggest just going with a more versatile unit like the Spider series amps or even a PodXT...which have more effects and modeling capabilities, and can still hook up via USB port. I got my PodXT used on Ebay with the instruction book and carrying case for an even $200. I think the only thing the Guitarport offers that the others don't do even more of or better, is that it comes with a recording software...but that's no big deal really. It's probably equivalent to Audacity, which is a free download for anyone. I'm not saying the Guitarport sucks or anything, just that it's purely for playing on the computer with. If that's what you decide on, you might even try getting it on Ebay as well to save a few bucks.

if u have a microphone socet in the back of your pc, it will be shaped like the headphone one (the small ones u get on pcs and mp3 etc)

and u have an amp with a headphone socet (it will be big and lead shaped). u basically have all you need. yopu will need to buy an extra lead. and an adaptor that converts from a lead size to the small mircrophone size. then plug the lead in to the headphone on the amp. stick the adaptor on the end, then plug thi8s into the pc microphone soccet.

you should have one of these microphone soccets although it might be round the bak of the pc.

a line 6 toneport should be pretty good they go for about Ā£90 and have a output that you could use for a amp i think and they have a software version of all the pod xt stuff, and they have some recording software but it is only a light version of the software

There's a thing called 'Lightsnake' if you just want to record guitar to computer. It's basically a 10' long, 1/4" to USB cord. (apparently it lights up too). It goes for $69 as far as I know.

cool iv never seen anything like that before, im guessing you could plug it into a effects processor or modeler or something instead of straight in to a guitar

I use Native Instruments Guitar Rig 2 which is kind of pricey but hands down, the most versitile and best sounding of all the amp simulator programs.

I use a hand made all tube pre amp that feeds my guitar into the computer and then it is processed by Guitar rig.

I also record with real tube amps also using a Palmer PGA-04 speaker simulator

What an awesome piece of gear the Palmer unit is. I saw that Satriani had recorded a bunch of stuff using it and so I checked it out.

Here's a link to some Guitar Rig sound clips.
