So the deal is trail and error?
I might get to detune even lower than drop d right?

Cause I know that one gauge more (let's say from 9 to 10) increases various pound of tension into the tremolo (pretty dramatic increase indeed).

Gee, this is a bit scary.

nothing to be scared about, you really won't be harming anything, you'll just need to spend 5-10 minutes adjusting the tremolo... which basically means, put on the strings, and try to tune up, when the trem starts lifting, tighten the springs (though, I'd really add at least a third spring, they're not expensive. I got some at my local guitar store for like $2 for 4 springs) then try to retune. tighten springs, tune, tighten springs, tune. continue doing that until you are at your desired tuning and the tremolo is parallel to the body.

on my ibanez guitar, when I was still real new to guitar I put 12's on it going from 9's  I didn't know about adjusting the springs or anything, so I tuned it to standard and the trem lifted way out! man, I was so surprised by that, I didn't really know anything about guitars back then. anyway, for the longest time I just ended up tuning it one whole step below standad (d-g-c-f-a-d) and put a capo on the second fret to be in standard. and that's how I played it for weeks until I was instructed about how a floating trem works (and I thank whoever it was here on GT who taught me all that stuff, lol)

I play in drop C tuning (drop D a whole step down) and was able to get my Ibanez set up, used 3 springs.....Took a while b/c of the string tension...adjust the springs, tune, adjust, tune....It can be a hassle.

I use the Ernie Ball Power Slinkys in the purple pack....

Jfrick and Toyota man:

Dudes, have to say I'm not the kind of guy that has the guts to put hands on hardware (I use a lot and I mean A LOT macintosh computers and know my way arround them pretty well actually but when I open the cabinet I start to sweat... handy jobs it's not much of my thing). same thing with my guitars, so my question is... how in hell do you adjust spring tension?

It's just a matter of adding springs? or there's a way to manually adjust it? if that's the case... gotta say I have no Idea how that's get done.

One again and I would like to quote Dr. Evil:

Awesome, thaks a lot I'll give it a look tomorrow morning

Yep, what Akira said.....

It's an easy adjustment. The only thing you'll need to look out for is to not loosen the screws to where they come out. But if your putting on thicker strings, you'll most likely be tightening the screws rather than loosening them.

The screws move the plate (claw is the technical term) that the springs are attached to back and forth.

A mighty place this is... thanks a lot man.

I might not be a Les paul fan but I certainly respect knowledge dude (why you guys love that thing... LP's are not that nice... I'm more into modern equipment, maybe someday I'll have one hanging on me an think "gee those guys were sooo right" but to be honest...

I don't think so :D

If you're serious about 8string guitars, you have to check out two British Luthiers, namely Hugh Manson, www.mansonguitars.com (I think)
and Doug...umm, dunno Dougs surname, but he makes Blackmachine guitars...
www.blackmachine.net
Black Machine are amazing guitars, I've played one or two and I lovge them...they're pretty pricey, but worth it, if you want it...he even makes a fan-fret 8 string.

check them out.
