Im new to the site but not to the guitar. I own and run a sports injury clinic and get many people with many injuries through the door. About three months ago I was visited by a guitarist with wrist problems and he was treated sucessfully. The thing is I was thinking of puting a page on my web site for rehabilitaion of guitarist/musicians injuries and preventative measures but not sure if it is of use as we guitarists seldom complain about pain etc as we love what we do and get on with it. Would be interesting if you suffer for your art. Any advice wanted can be emailed to you if you like as I am pretty bloody good at what I do and work with and have many world champions and professionals on my books.

I would love to hear what kind of things can be done to help prevent, or at least prolong the onset of CTS. I'm a draftsman, so I'm on a computer all day, and using a mouse and typing with bad support for my hands is starting to cause some pain in my right hand (which I've also broken twice). The main pain I have is in my wrist, straight down from my middle finger. It doesn't hurt all the time, nor does it ever hurt very bad (to the point of making me stop doing something), but I'm still scared it will get that way. I'll gladly accept any info you can give on this subject. I know of several others on GT that have similar problems with CTS, so i'm sure your info would be gladly accepted!

With pleasure expect an email in the next day or so with help and advice.
One thing you can do when not playing guitar is to use a splint, its not always posibble but restricting the range of motion helps but as with all things not perfect. On bad day place a bag of ice on the arm affected about 2 - 3 inches from the elbow and let the ice do its job, explain more in email but thankyou for you reply.

Not just guitarists, but all musicians are at risk for this kind of injury. Any professional orchestra keeps qualified medical staff on call.

With so many young players having the guitar slung down around knee-level, I forsee a massive cull due to carpal tunnel and other wrist, elbow and shoulder ailments.
