Why the hate for Hammet?
Kirk Hammet is the reason I started playing guitar, and the reason I continued to want to play after I started. As I started getting into the more technical stuff and listening to different guitarists, I found that a lot of people didnt like Hammet and they had a lot of negative things to say about him. What gives?

Most people don't like the fact that his solo's are mostly (but not all) repeated segments of scales, just moves to different positions. And he does overuse the wah a lot.
I like Hammett though.

I dislike Hammet because of his ungraceful overuse of the wah. That in combination with his REALLY repetitive, sloppy style of easy-shred pretty much destroys him in my eyes.

Hammet? I really don't think he's that brilliant when compared to other greats but I love his songs and solos, and just the way he plays, though I think st anger is a definite step back from what metallica used to do.
And i guess in a sense, that pathetic over use of whammy bar must make him unique? I love it

I really like Kirk Hammett. He's played some of the most popular lead guitar parts in modern rock, and they're popular for a reason - they're distinctive, energetic, and well-written. He's no technical prodigy, but he is by no means a slouch in that department, as evidenced by his work on ...And Justice for All in particular. Postmodern and neo-classical shredders may look down their noses at him, but I bet a lot of them would give anything to have come up with a solo like "One", "The Thing That Should Not Be", "Wherever I May Roam" or "Dyer's Eve".

I REALLY sincerely doubt that.

As far as him overusing the wah, is that personal opinion because you dont like the sound, or is it more of a technical reason?

kirk hammett isnt bad. i agree he overuses the wah pedal and he does alot of repeditive stuff, but hes just doing his thing. only people who play guitar know what he is actualy doing. most people who listen to him arent guitarists and dont know any thing other than he sounds pretty good. so WHO CARES?!?

You're asking members of a guitar player's forum, so you'd better be ready for some informed opinions from people who do know. :p

He was also one of the reasons I started playing. I don't really like him anymore.
I could still sing you every line, lick and solo from ...and justice for all and master of puppets though... :D
I just can't stand that tone. It's so bad. So bad. His solos bore me, they seem mostly to impress non-guitar players with their speed.
Also the wah thing, i don't think he really knew how to use it. Up-down-up-down-up...just rock it all day.
So don't jump on me. I get an opinion.

I think people get sick of hearing SO much of it.
A friend of mine went to see Metallica a few years back and the first thing he did after getting home was take his wah totally out of his pedal board and throw it in the back of his closet.
It took him a few months to put it back, too.

This guy Chris Avarn, when asked about Kirk said "He's the luckiest guy to ever try to play guitar." Too true. The fact that he just does the 12-15-12-15 pull off crap everysingle time gets annoying.
