Go for it. It will not hurt you in any way. If anything it will help you play better IMO.

You'll gain a better understanding of rhythm and how a bass and drums work together to create the all important back beat.

just play both! you'll end up using bass technique on guitar and guitar technique on bass and it'll greatly improve your playing!

I've been playing a lot of slap pop stuff on the guitar lately - it gives such an orginal tone, with so much variance, that I love it! Can't do it all the time though, cuz my fingers are unfortunately not fast enough for that...

One thing to support buying a bass - you will find many more opportunities as a freelance musician to gig with a bass than a guitar. Guitar is just not needed for a lot of things people are hiring for, or they will already have a guitar player (cuz everybody and their brother plays it). I personally thik the bass has ten times more soul than the guitar does, if soul can be quantitatively be measured.

Or you can just be like Charlie Hunter, and get a custom made $3,000 guitar that has bass and guitar strings on it, with a special fretting system - then you can play both at the same time!
There are only two important things in life - There's music and theres girls, not necessarily in that order....

yep, i know bass players r more flexible in genres than guitarists, n that hurts me... :) i mean i believe everybody has a purpose in a band, but bass players known as jokers n thats unfair... as u said, people thinkin "everybody can play guitar"... i dont know man, maybe ur right... guitar has no carrier opportunities... in the other sayin, im not that unique n talented at the same time...

so its ok, my twang queen not goin anywhere, but its time for a mistress... :)
yeah, another good point, they have similar techniques so both disciplines support each other...

thanx everybody for make me think...

or you could just get a classical guitar, and play classical music, which, alot of the time has a bass line played with your thumb and a melody played with your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd fingers picking. :D

Totally true!! I just got a bass three weeks ago and it has really improved my understanding or music theory and even my fingerstyle playing is so much better. Fascinating how just learning to play the roots forces you to actually think about the chord progression and try to "hear" whats going to come next in the song. It even improves your lead playing on guitar. I say go for it :) get a bass.

yeah do it, but also, keep playing your guitar like a bass, why not? does it sound good? then do it...besides, if you keep it up, you are no longer playing guitar like a bass, but just playing guitar like YOU play guitar.

First, I wanna say this is the greatest thread title ever. Second, get a bass. That goes for all of you.
You go outside and practice screaming. We'll play music while you're gone.
