ha ha, after reading that explanation I was expecting something shred-tastic. but honestly, that was pretty good! it fit in a way.

btw, it's not required that you perform a jazz solo over th backing, you can do whatever you want. but seeing as the backing is jazz, it usually makes the most sense to do a jazz solo, but what you did sounded good, so no worries! :D

Cookie Monster, Force of Shred - great work! Those were fantastic.

I said I was going to record something, but I've decided to pike out now. :o My solo is so embarrassingly inept compared to everybody else's it's not worth posting - but don't worry! I am learning a lot from everybody else's playing, and that's the point of this exercise.

Hello everyone. First time posting here. Some great stuff so far. The background track is very well done.

I found this thread today so I gave it a try. I kind of bluesed it up. Not the best work but I will try and improve it.

I'm a bit intimidated but here it is. This is only my second try at recording so it's a little ah!

Hope you enjoy it. Good luck to everyone giving this a go.

Hello
I thought I might try and come up with something, It's not much but when I listened to Julian Vickers backing track I felt more of a blues or a surfy sound. So I started to noodle around with it and came up with this. I kept it pretty simple but I did get out of key in a spot or two but I'll keep working on it. Gm, C7, Fmajer, I'm going by ear, is a great progression. I just couldn't get a Jazz beat going for me. We have all month to work on this , Don't we?? It was a lot of fun just sitting back and trying a bunch of stuff. I tried it on several Guitars but it sounded better on a humbucker to me.
Here's the link to my music page on my web site

Hope it passes the death test....

So far everyone's has sounded great in it's own way. I'm glad to see some new people around this thread. Makes me feel like this may be a GT staple for years to come. :)

Hello All,

I received an email from Guitar Tricks talking about a "Solo Assignment", so, I thought I would check it out. Anyway I listened to the backing track and thought what could I record to that, as this type of music is so alien to me and then I heard Julian Vickers solo, and that was just incredible . I haven't tried recording anything as of yet and I am really nervous about trying it as I have never, and I repeat never recorded anything.

I may try recording something "if" I can work up the courage :o.

Cheers,
V.

I did try creating a solo for that backing track. There a a couple of mistakes with the recording and I had an awful time trying to get a decent sound out of the unit I used for recording, a Johnson J-Station. And this is the "first time" ever that I have recorded anything .

Remember if you haven't got anything nice to say, then don't say it at all :).

This is so embrassing :o.

Cheers,
V.

That wasn't bad at all, Jeff - a very good idea, actually! I am sincerely jealous! Structurally, it had a Miles Davis solo sort of feel to it, especially the way you came in with the lower-register stuff towards the beginning. You probably could have used some more legato and some bends to give it a smoother feel, but it was still very good overall.

Vercingetorix, you did a good job as well! You probably could have toned down the high-speed picking a little, but some of your melodic ideas were great. Nice to see yet another Aussie join us on the boards, by the way. :D

Well done, gentlemen - keep them coming.
