Is it merely a matter of personal preference or are there notable differences between the two in terms of what one can do versus what the other can't do?

Me... I do mostly lead and fills but I also go into heavy rhythm. Ideal tone: Somewhere between a particularly dirty SRV tone and some nasty grindcore death metal puke... with Black Sabbath somewhere in between. (All three at once!!! :D )

What are the differences, if any real differences? My current guitar is HSS and I like it... it's also the "road less traveled"... yet another reason to dig it, I think.

ok...
u have a fat strat, u know H-S-S... its like strat but with humbucker boost...
i mean its just like strat with better distortion handle...

srv n metal
n u wanna smthin weird man...
(dont get offense, its just my opinion...) :p

whatever, fat strats r like multirole things, u know humbucker n single in one guitar... theyr not bassy as H-H, and not trebly as S-S-S...
if u wanna tasty palm muted metal sound, u should go for H-H...
or u can stick with your current machine...
u know try H-H n compare it with H-S-S...

i hope these gives u any ideas... :o
