I'd stay away from van halen for right now. It's a little too much for you at only two weeks. I would learn "Iron Man" by black sabbath. The intro to Back in Black by ac/dc. or highway to hell, by ac/dc. dont try to learn the solos yet, you need alot more work before you can get there!
You'll get there soon, Just keep practicing!
I am Comfortably Numb... :D

Try "Horse With No Name" by Neil Young - it only has a couple of chords, but it's a good strumming pattern to begin with. I can tell by your choice of beginner's songs that you're interested in hard rock and heavy metal, but I think it's best to learn the basics of a variety of styles before you specialise in one. See if you can look up some easy pop, jazz, blues, classical and reggae tunes as well as rock songs. :)
"It's all folk music... I ain't never heard no horse sing!"
- Attributed variously to Leadbelly and Louis Armstrong
If at first you don't succeed, you are obviously not Chuck Norris.

A good song to learn for a beginner would be "About a Girl" by Nirvana. It is very easy and will give you some practice with moving between chord shapes.
You go outside and practice screaming. We'll play music while you're gone.

If you want a good easy song thats quite slow and easy on the ears "bright eyes" is nice and really easy.
Also Pretty Woman is a good one its on this site and only has two chords it was one of the first I learnt and its good to get your fingers streching if you use one finger per fret rule.
oh and smells like teen spirt is good and easy but sounds better with distortion....
Hope ive helpd ya

Well bro if u are just lernin smoke on the water now.. i suggest u learn as much ac/dc as u can they are mostly about 3to 4 at most 12 chords.and theres lots of different stumming patterens. thats what i did. and eventually try lernin a solo or two....unlees of chorse u hate ac dc and then shouldnt reall be playing rock and roll.lol but any wasy give it a try it will make u better (back in black, TNT, highway to hell, thunderstruck, )those are good starters. good luck man .. dont wory about it youl be playin van halen in no time just play ur baby every day

Starting out for me there were two bands who supplied my beginner "exercises":
Pink Floyd
Mother, Is There Anybody Out There, Wish You Were Here, Money
Led Zeppelin
Heartbreaker, Rock'n'Roll, The Lemon Song, Immigrant Song, Whole Lotta Love
edit: A Horse With No Name was mentioned, but it's actally by America, and Schmange tabbed most of it here.

Here is what I recommend.
Note-- I can send examples -- Chord Progressions and lists of songs to get you started.
Bottom Line-- Learn the basic chords w/in the first 3-4 frets-- E, C, D, G, A, B and F (unbarred ).
Get these down to where if some one were to wake you up in the middle of the night and hand you a guitar and tell you playone of these chords you could do it still half asleep.
With these chords you can play a variety of songs.
Easy one
Chord progression--
D, C, G
3 songs you can play with these--
1) Blue on Black -- Kenny Wayne Shepard
2) Country Road-- James Taylor
3) Over the hills and far-away-- Led Zep
On the last song you may have to play more of a chord progression like this follow the groove of the song.
D, C, D, G -- keep playing these three chords in various progressions and different styles and you will become amazed at how many different songs you will recognioze-- Like U2? Try playing these chords to the Joshua Tree album. With an ocasional A thrown in for good measure.
Also remember to focus more on the "groove" of the songs you play and less on the actual melodies of the songs. You will notice that this will help your strumming and palm muting.
After you get these basic major chords down then you should shift to minor chords, then shift to mixing major and minors, then.......
Welcome to the world of Guitar. Here practice does not make perfect but persistance. Always hang in there and try to learn from everybody who can even strum a guitar.

Here is something that I have gotten alot of mileage on and it gets you playing alot of songs.
These are standard "oldies". Yu have probrably heard these in movies, TV shows, your Grandma :D
Chords: C, Am, F, G (repeat over and over again until some yells at you from another room to "STOP").
Blue Moon -- Play 2 strums per chord
Breaking up is hard to do -- 2 strms per chrd
Duke Of Earl -- 4 strms per chrd
Earth Angel -- 2 strms per chrd (If Micheal J Fox can play this you can too :p )
Runaround Sue -- 8 strms per chrd
Why do fools fall in love? (their fools)-- 2 strms per chrd
As you may notice that alot of these songs are from the 50's. You got any Elvis laying around? Try the same chords to figure out some of his stuff.
**Elvis sang alot of "blues" songs so try this basic stripped down chord progression**
E A B Over and over again. Or Em Am Bm.
How many Elvis songs can you play after 1 week?
Good Luck!
