CAlling all vocalists
Okay I have no idea where this should go, but it isn't a guitar question so I'll put it here. Basically I'm looking for some mic suggestions. What mics do you find work the best for vocals? Every one I've tried with the band destroys my voice. I used a Behringer mic for the last class presentation and I was surprised by how much it came out of the amp sounding like me, so I'm planning to look into some more Behringers. Any other suggestions?

Shure SM-58... it's pretty much the most used vocal mic out there... especially for live performances. there may be some other studio mics out there that are much better... but for the price you can't go wrong really... especially since you know it's going to sound good live and you won't have to worry so much about breaking a 500+ dollar studio mic. It's pretty versatile. A good investment...

Okay but have you used it yourself? The site looks promising but you know they can put whatever they want on there.

+1 I used these in the studio I worked at. It's the quintessential vocal mic.

Yeah, me and my best friend have 3 in our small studio. They are as good as they say. Pretty much everyone uses them because they're the most consistant and easy to work with.

I prefer and use the Sennheiser e835 over Shure, however thats just me.

Check that... we don't have 3 SM-58's we only have 2. The other one is an SM-57... which is an instrument mic.

I've never had the opportunity to try a Shure or a Sennheiser, but the Behringer mic I've used works fine for me... which model are you using?

- Attributed variously to Leadbelly and Louis Armstrong
If at first you don't succeed, you are obviously not Chuck Norris.

I like using my 57 for live use. It provides a nice midrange punch, and smooths out some of the high end raspiness in my voice. It sucks for my voice in the studio though. Like the others have said, I would probably go with the SM58.

So how much does the SM58 go for? Remember, we're Canadian, so whatever it is, just multiply it by $3,700. :)

about $100 US. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Live/Sound/Microphones/Wireless?sku=270101

Awesome, thanks guys. Looks like the decision's pretty clear, although I will naturally try some out first. I will probably get the Behringer first to hold me over until I have some other stuff and can justify this purchase. Rep for everyone who gave advice!

I have a samson Q7, the brand has virtually no street credit but its worked wonders for me and quite a few audiophiles who are sick of Sure's inability to refresh their product line have actually praised the Samson Q7 saying that it's marginally better then the SM58. That said, look around, try them out (no matter how akward it might be) and walk home with an awesome mic!
edit: well when i said Samson has virtually no street cred i meant compared to sure mic's, b4 i get a loud outcry (samson are known for their wireless solutions i think)

cant go wrong with an sm58...I have three sm57's that are part of a drum mic kit, and I love them...great instrument mics...
The sm58 is the industry standard for a reason...
