it's not often I record stuff, because my recording set-up sucks. but here is something I made today, but wrote months ago, it's called "brought upon" though I think that name is kinda stupid and might change it later

That rythm guitar should be done an a miked acoustic, not electric or acoustic-electric. It was good, but could have changed up a little more. You can do way better with the lead. Try alternative picking and some arpeggios. It just sounds to me like you downpicked everything on 1 or 2 strings. Don't be afraid to go low with it.

I was thinking the same things pretty much. I thought it just kinda went on too long and was too repetitive.
I think it would sound better on acoustic, but I don't have a mic, or a steel-string acoustic. I have a classical, but playing chords on one of those things is so weak that the clean electric is just so much better. maybe after I get my dream studio all set up
and I too thought that the lead was kinda boring. I can definately do better, but my creativity with leads doesn't really come out real good unless my backing has drums and bass. again, maybe after I get my dream studio set up.

Rhythm strumming can sound quite nice on an electric, Most strumming stuff by Live is done on an electric and it sounds awesome (Listen to 'Dance with You'). I guess it all depends on the tone.

You don't need a dream studio to get things like drums and bass. I use my keyboard a lot for the bass and drum parts of my songs. A technique I use a lot for stuff that doesn't have drums in it, is to play over a drum track, then take out the drum track later. A drum track will put a lot more groove in your playing than a metronome.

I liked it, but Id have to say the rhythm part sounded a lot like Dylan's "Knockin On Heavens Door." Good job.

never heard of it, but the chords I used were pretty common: G, D, Am, and C and I just added my pinky onto a G note on the first string on the chords. pretty simple, but it sounded pretty cool to me.

it's funny how much more you notice when you listen to the song a couple days after you record it. omg, I flinch every time I hear that off-key note at 0:48. and I realize how boring my lead was! wow, after about a minute I want to turn it off! this song needs some work, maybe if I have time tomorrow I'll give it a whirl

Not bad. Same chord progression as "Knocking on Heavens Door", and the rythm guitar sounds a bit out of tune. Either that, or it's intonation is off, or you were pushing down really hard, or bending the strings a bit when fretting the chords. But, other than that, it sounded nice. Keep it up!

ok, I tracked down some sound clips of this "knockin on heavens door" and no, I've never heard it before (don't look at me like that!! I wasn't even born in the 70's!!!) his chord progression is very similar, doesn't sound like an exact match to me though.

*comes back from the dead* OK but that song is huge classic written by Dylan but also done by Eric Clapton and Guns 'n' Roses among others. We need a rock history lesson!

Ugh, ok, the chords were all right, if a little sloppily strummed, but that lead man...clean it up.

Pretty good, man, it's got some potential. I think you just need to incorporate a few more progressions into the mix if you want to avoid those "Knocking On Heaven's Door" comparisons! ;) At first I thought the rhythm guitar made a few fumbles on the timing, but those little pauses turned out to be quite effective for the feel of the piece, so don't worry about 'em!
Well done, and keep working on it - it could turn into something really good.

alright, I decided to take up a 2nd try on this thing. of course, this still wouldn't be like final copy or anything, I realize several mistakes and that the quality still sounds like ****. but until I can afford some recording equipment, this is the best it'll get.

www.soundclick.com/nathansteich

I did one take with a distorted guitar, and realized how crappy it sounded (especially since my recording method sounds terrible with distorted guitars, hence the reason I don't have any metal clips uo :D ) so I took out the distorted guitar, to see how that sounded, and it was missing something and pretty boring... *sigh* if only I had money
