Finish, coatings, lamination, and their effects on tone.

I'm a bit confused. I've heard it said that if you have nothing but a clearcoat on a guitar body (as opposed to paint, etc.) that you get optimal tone.

Though I imagine this would be in terms of the cleanest settings possible... and perhaps you'd have to have ears like a dolphin to tell the difference....

But then I've also heard it said that a laminate top (i.e. flamed maple) or even a thicker carved top (like on a Les Paul) have no effect whatsoever on tone. Why would a discernably thick layer of wood other than the body wood have no effect, while a standard solid paint job would? :confused:

Also, does the pickguard have any discernable effect? I know some folks prefer bare wood to a pickguard... though I imagine that's largely for aesthetic reasons.

I realize it's more about how you play than about your set-up... but... well... (seemingly) contradictory information floating around makes one scratch one's head.
