Who are the players that have influenced you the most, and how have they done so?

Mine have changed a lot recently, as I've steered away from heavy metal playing towards jazz fusion and alternative rock. My main influences are John McLaughlin (the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Shakti), Robbie Krieger (the Doors), George Benson, Buck Dharma (Blue Oyster Cult), David Gilmour (Pink Floyd, solo) and Chris deGarmo (Queensryche, Jerry Cantrell).

My approach to jamming and composition is pretty much a mixture of John's exoticism and George's smooth-jazz style. Robbie has influenced my rhythm playing a lot, I like the way he plays loosely with occasional linear fills. My rock lead playing sounds a bit like Buck's, in that it's tense and energetic, and a bit like David's, in that it's based around the blues with lots of vibrato and wide bending. And Chris? I'm influenced by him in that I'm constantly trying to get a tone that's half as awesome as his! :D

That said, although these players have influenced me, my "skills"(or lack thereof) shouldn't really be on the same page as theirs!

Most of, but not all of my music is blues influenced. But I do also like to play some 80's metal, and shred every once in a while, but the blues is my first priority.

And yes, Albert King Rules! :D

Slash has been a big influence on me, but at the moment im trying to bridge more into blues and my blues idol is Stevie Ray Vaughn, I really love his stuff, he was a genius when it came to composition and phrasing.

The first rock band I ever liked was Nirvana, and Kurt Cobain is still a huge influence on me. Also, Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo (from Sonic Youth), Jimmy Page (Led Zep), George Harrison (the Beatles), Chet Atkins, David Gilmour, and Robbie Krieger. I like these players because they are good, but not impossibly good. I love Jimi Hendrix as well, but he's so good it's inhuman. It's hard to aspire to be "inhuman." I like players who are fairly simple, and yet sound great, and that's why the aforementioned ones really stand out for me.

I like a whole lot of guitarists but the ones that actually influenced me as a player and helped me to form my own style are:

Marty Friedman
Jason Becker
Dave Murray & Adrian Smith
Joe Satriani

I only started listening to Yngwie lately and I can't believe I deprived myself for so long! I'm getting a lot from his chamber orcehstra album, really nice compositions and the guitarwork is not too in your face - the only other album of his I have is the "best of" instrumental album, also becoming a strong influence.

Yeah, but LA Woman is actually my least favourite Doors album. I like Strange Days and Waiting for the Sun.

I feel like if you like Yngwie, you'd like Tony MacAlpine much better. Just a feeling.

Dude, what about Janick Gers?

My influence to play guitar was mainly system of a down, their songs sounded-so hard to play. Hmm...things have changes, haven't they?
Now if I ever don't feel like playing, I just throw on the Dt LIve at Budokan dvd, and within 2 minutes, I want to play again.
