Just got an old Jackson Kelly and am trying to get it set up to how I like it. I use 10-52 strings and it's very difficult to get the bridge to sit flush with the heavier bottom strings, too much tension on the springs in the back.
Is it possible to even set up a floyd rose bridge with heavier strings without having a ridiculously high action? Will the tremelo still perform properly?
I'm going to just take it to a tech because i'm sick of playing around with it and just want it done, but I want to know for sure before I take it so i'm not wasting his time and my money kind of thing. If anyone could help me out here that'd be great. thanks!

In brief:

Yes, it can be done.

Getting someone else to do it is likely to save your sanity.

If the springs in the back aren't enough to keep the bridge in balance (after adjusting them), you will need to add an extra spring.

I play a 7-string with 11's on it, which takes 5 springs in the back. Most floyd rose equiped guitars only come with 3...

Yeah i've tried about every combination of springs in the back that can be done but to no avail. Basically i would assume a heavier spring would do the trick but have no access to any. Usually i can do my own work to my guitars but im a floyd rose newcomer, so now that i know it can be done i'll get it to the tech and feel happy to know im not wasting anyones time :)
just needed some confirmation!
thanks alot guys, these seem like very friendly and supportive forums.
I enjoy that.

i did the same thing with my ibanez; i put the heavy bottoms with the top 3 strings in 10 gauge format, and i had to get two extra springs to keep tension, and then reset the action. cost about 25 bucks altogether, no biggie.
