So where are the role models for girl guitarists? I wish there were some girl guitar goddesses! I am the only chick I know of that can play lead guitar as good as any guy, and yet can you name one girl guitar shredder that got famous as a guitar hero? There's bonnie raitt, but she's not really a guitar virtuoso, she doesn't push the limits on guitar, so she's not a guitar heroine, although I guess she's the only one who holds the title. I wouldn't put her in the same category as Satriani, Page, Vaughn, Hendrix, etc. There's Lita Ford but she didn't have any really catchy songs even though she did have serious speed, there's the shredmistress, but have any of these women really had serious commercial success?

I decided to look around on the internet to see if there are any like me, and there are! There are women who can seriously play guitar, but they don't get the exposure or the recognition, soooo, no guitar heroines. Sue Foley seems to be leading the pack, and there is a bunch she is writing about in a book, so we'll see who they are. However, will they ever reach the goddess status that they deserve along with all the guy Gods??

Aaah, I just had to gripe for a moment. Now I'll go back to worshipping my male guitar heros who have taught me everything I know!

Do you have any thoughts on this or have any chick players to suggest that I check out? I want to know about all great female guitar players if they exist... know of any?

While not technical masters, 7 Year Bitch and Bottom are two damn good all-female rock bands.

There's this one chick I know of called The Great Kat. I haven't heard any of her music, but I read about her in 2 different guitar magazines from different decades, and the way they were talkin' her up, she sounds pretty amazing. Not to mention clinically insane.

I don't know a lot about shredding, so you be the judge.

If you use the Search button near the top of the thread, you can mine the archives for some threads on this topic. I like the fact that Liona Boyd was so highly-regarded during her carreer that she brought both Eric Clapton and David Gilmour on as sidemen for her "Personnae" album. :D

I don't think it's a skill issue. It's the same double standard that distorts any profession. Women are discouraged from 'shining' in the same aggressive way that seems to be perfectly acceptable when men do it. Don't get mad - get better.

I concur. I kinda wish that that great kat character had something more on her website. I was a bit interested to hear if she had anything worth listening to. The image thing can go, but if her music doesn't suck then I can cope. But I don't think that 6 seconds of someone else's material is good enough to go basing opinions off of.

Yeah, that name rings a bell, but I've forgotten who she played with.

Another good female guitarist is Emily J. Burton from Fireball Ministry.

Jennifer Batten came to our music store to do a Digitech product demonstration a couple years ago and if you're looking for a guitar goddess to look up too I'd say look to her for sure. She's pretty much as free as you can be on a fretboard shred wise. Really talented player. She had all sorts of awesome stories of when she played with Micheal Jackson and such. She led quite the successful career, although the fact that shes touring small town music stores to sell Digitech products now may not say too much for her career as it stands now..ah well haha

Kaki King is another amazing female player.....She plays acoustic though, but shreds in her own way....She has a strange approach to the guitar...

I was gonna mention Jennifer Batton. She can throw down.

The guitarist from Heart is a girl, and I love her guitar work. the thing is to become a God/Goddess you have to bring something new to guitar and be amazing at it. Look at Van Halen - amazing at tapping, he revolutionized it. Malmsteen for his shredding. Stevei Ray, well he was just a beast of a man. B.B. King for his soul in every note. Same with David Gilmour. Satriani for mixing feeling with shredding.

I don't know why there are no women guitar Goddesses, but if you wana become one you gotta bring something new to guitar. or something that was lost and resurect it. thats also cool. I am sure there are great girl guitar players, but we havent had a new God in a while. At least i havent heard of a new one for a while.
When it comes down to it, our guitar's will always be there for us.

is it not just because more guys like heavier rock metal and the other more technically chanlenging styles. at least thats my experience. and as there are more guys playin there will be more good guys playin and then a lucky few of them will actually get the fame. so there just aint enough girls. its not enough that there are tallented female guitarests cos there are tonnes of male ones that are tallented and not famous.

also with things like metal it is very agressive which firls arent supposed to be according to scociety

Google "The great kat" she has music on her site, shes a female shredder.
A bit of an odd one tho...she thinks she's an incartion of motzart or beethoven cant remeber which one. But any way she can play.

Its funny you mention this. I do know of a few but dont know there names. One played for Natalie Merchant first solo album. I saw a chick here live that was a little oriental girl who played in a three piece band and freakin smokes most men I have seen. Her fingers are tiny and so is she, but look the hell out when she gets a guitar in her hand. But its ironic that these are good guitar players and I dont remember there names.
