Sorry, there have probably been dozens of threads like this already, but I need to let off some steam, so bear with me if you have the patience :o . I'm in my final year of high school, and it's a bitch, for want of a more elegant description. I've got work pouring down on me ceaselessly - I have the first stage of an assignment due tomorrow that I've barely started, and I have my half-yearly examinations in a little over a week. I'm stressed out of my tiny brain to the point where I am - no joke - undergoing regular psychiatric treatment. My social life has, more or less, disappeared off the face of the earth; my guitar chops are rubbish, because I haven't had the time to do any real practice in weeks. I think that in the end, I'll get a decent UAI - enough to get into a good university course - but I won't get the astronomical score that my parents want me to get, and that's going to disappoint them something awful, possibly to the point where they'll keep nagging me about how much of a failure I am until they day they (or I) die. I'm sorry to be such a whinger, but I was wondering whether anybody here had some general advice to help me stay focussed for the next eight months?

As Ive seen it, high school was the exact amount of time that it possibly couldve lasted without me flipping out. I dont think I couldve handled the disciplinary bs for one more day or I wouldve snapped. Imo, its a joke. I didnt do anything the entire 4 years and passed as an honor grad with an 85 average.

Do your best without killing yourself, cuz to be honest, its not gonna get easier. College is A LOT of work. My philosophy is, why give 100% when you can get by with 50? If youre parents are disappointed with you, so freekin what. If you get into a decent college and youre happy thats all that matters. The work always gets done. Trust me. Im the biggest procrastinator ever, and it always gets done in one way or another. Just relax, pick up your axe, and play.

The only real advice I can give you is relax and dont kill yourself. Its high school and its not the big deal people make of it. Theres always time for redemption.
Dont shoot yourself in the head.

Thanks, mate. :)

Oh, dude, you have no idea how much I'd love to pick up my guitar and rip the blues after dinner, but there's this SOR assignment... should I do it tonight, or play guitar, then get up at the crack of dawn tomorrow and do it?

If your flipping out about high school, wait till university,.. then wait till graduate school... anyways if you cant learn how to manage your time in high school...good luck. Advice is play guitar and learn how to manage your time.

Exactly... do what you need to get by.

My Differential Equations teacher told me... "You know what happened to the engineer that got a D in Differential Equations............. He became an Engineer"

I've been notoriously known for being an underachiever... I find it's a lot better to put yourself in that postion than to be an overachiever. Being an underachiever is easy because I can put 50% of effort... sometimes no effort at all into a whole semester and get by with C's... I went through High School much like the one guy.... I got B's and some C's... And I had to have a meeting with my principal, guidence counselor, and parents after I got a 1310 on my SATs because they said I had been underachieving my entire time in High School.... whatever... I like not trying. Just do what you have to do to get by and try to make time for what you like to do... Have fun... College sucks too... well the school work sucks, but I love the parties and bars... But the real world sucks even more... Have fun now and get the most out of it.

Well, grade 11 is easy. But what grinds my gears is people always asking what I'm going to do with my life. It sucks when you get disillusioned that you won't be a rockstar.

Forget about your sin - give the audience a grin
Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow.

Just graduate. Let the rest fall into place. And then...um...you win.
You go outside and practice screaming. We'll play music while you're gone.

Thanks, everybody. Well, I finished the assignment AND found some time to play guitar. And I've got a study timetable worked out for the rest of the term, so I know exactly when I can afford to slot in a practice session. Thanks once again for the advice. :)

And I graduated just fine. Not straight A, but not barely passing either. Some classes I did good, others were a slump, just depended.
