a mixer mixes signals form several different channels together.

It can also be used to balance signal from a microphone (which puts out a very weak signal) with a guitar or line level signal (which is much stronger).
My instructors page and www.studiotrax.net for all things recording.

A small one for home studio use looks similar to this:

It lets you plug several mics, synths, and inputs from effects units etc, then outputs it into stereo. A little one like this gives you 8 channels, volume and pan control, basic EQing, monitoring etc.. plus phantom power for mics that require it.
Definately a requirement for any studio if you plan on doing some decent recordings. Even if just for the convenience of being able to leave everything plugged in.

For home recordings I don't think it's very neessary.... especially if you have a good soundcard. I also like to play direct to pc with the tone I'm happy with then EQ later, I prefer the digital approach so that any tweaks can be undone. Mixers are handy though if you're playing with a band and want to get levels right and add a bit of EQ.
