For home recordings I don't think it's very neessary.... especially if you have a good soundcard. I also like to play direct to pc with the tone I'm happy with then EQ later, I prefer the digital approach so that any tweaks can be undone. Mixers are handy though if you're playing with a band and want to get levels right and add a bit of EQ.
