can anyone help? I have a Rickenbacker 4001 bass. The bass pickup works fine, both volume and tone. But the treble pickup is behaving strangely. The volume control has no affect at all, and it's tone control is acting like a volume control (with tone full on), and the output is very low. The tone control will only work with the volume control up full. I downloaded the schematic for the bass from Rickenbacker's website, and replaced all the bass's wiring, following the diagram to the letter. Still no change. I replaced the volume pot with a new one. Still no change. I replaced the tone pot with a new one - STILL no change. I removed the treble pickup from the bass, and wired up a new set of pots and capacitor and independant jack socket, using a standard Fender Precision bass diagram - and the same problem still persists. Can anyone offer me any advice on what is wrong with this pickup, and what to do to get it working properly?

hmm, when did this problem start? was it like that when you got it? or did you do something to it one day that messed it up? or was it completly random?

i bet if we know something about this we could help you more.

but if you did all that and nothing went right, i bet theres something wrong with eaither A) the pickup or B) the board.

When I bought the bass, the treble pickup was not a genuine Ric - whatever had happened to the bass in the past, someone had fitted a fender Jazz style pickup onto the Ric baseplate. So I got a genuine Ric treble pickup complete with surround and cover from ebay. I carefully examined the wiring from the pickup when I bought it, and it all looks original, right down to the heatshrink wrap over the soldered joints.

I really am quite baffled as to why the pickup is behaving in this manner - so any advice is most welcome.

It sound as if the volume and tone control are somehow wired in series

Sometimes when tone conrol acts as a volume, the capacitor has been left out

Normally the tone control connects to the output of the pick up and shorts treble frequencies through the tone pot and capacitor to ground.
