I decided to try going to a bar tonight for the first time and I'm kinda disappointed. The entire place was choked with cheap cigarette smoke and one can't even get more than 2/3 of a serving of liquor here for $3.50 without resorting to budget cat p*ss. Seriously, wtf?

Is this the norm or are there better bars where all y'all live?

At least over here in Massachusetts, you can only smoke if you are on fire... So now you just smell the stench of old booze and old men...

No thats pretty much it. You can find bars where the drinks are a little cheaper. My wife goes to bingo at the local VFW. On friday nights (when I used to drink) I'd go with her and go downstairs to the bar where shots were $2.25 and a beer a $1.50. There was also a $.25 pool table and the best shooters in town would go there to play. That place is where I got good. It is also where I met a man named Bill Quinn, who happened to become a good friend and the owner of the studio I worked at. I was there one night and he and some friends started jamming a few tunes. I went home grabbed my ax and sat in with'em. He asked me to help him record some songs for his kids. The rest is history. Unfortunatly he got sick and had to sell the place. I guess the point is you never know where going out for a drink on a friday night can take you.

I wonder how long it will be before this becomes a political or religious thread, or we start a debate over what brand of raspberry preserves keeps the longest.
You go outside and practice screaming. We'll play music while you're gone.

My agenda says we've got a debate on the existence of Atlantis here at about 3:30. I'll be back at that time.

3:30!? That was supposed to be when we had the big barbeque and people discussed their sexual orientation and the effect this has on human evolution! :(

You've got the barbeque scheduled for today? I thought that was this weekend.

No, the badminton is only on the last weekend of the month, and speaking of which I think All In The Family was the best show.

Well the bar can be an expensive place. Try happy hour. I got trashed monday evening by 7:30 for about 8 dollars ;) . Here in Tempe and Scottsdale, the popular bars usually have a cover on the weekends but with some sort of special on drinks. It's usually worth the money; once youre inside, theres the hottest girls as far as the eyes can see.....this is making me thirsty, think i'll have a Sam Adams Seasonal. Cheers!

The bar in my town burnt down sometime last year. Now if you want to drink, you have to do it at what we like to call "the charred pile of rubble." Bring your wallet though, the charred pile of rubble is not cheap.

That reminds me, I have three bottles of Sam Adams Winter Lager I need to get rid of. The stuff is a bit too malty for my tastes.

There's only one real bar (as opposed to alcohol-serving restaurant) in this town so I don't have the luxury of shopping around.

You think that's bad... hit up a bar on the Vegas strip. Double-digit prices for drinks that would go for three bucks in Iowa.

But beyond that, Vegas is a drinker's paradise. Many bars on and off the Strip are open 24/7 and they never stop serving booze. You read that right!!! You can literally go in at six in the morning - when 80% of the night crowd has left - and get tanked up before heading into your day job. And you can drink on the streets... the tourists and the homeless folks just adore that fact. Coming from L.A. where the entire town is dead by 11 a.m. and the bars close around midnight... it's just unreal.

There's this place on Maryland Parkway called Moose's... on Tuesday nights for ten bucks you can get all you can drink beer. Your eyes deceive ye not!!!

Edited to add: In Las Vegas you can smoke in grocery stores! Well, as long as you keep it over by the slot machines. Yes, they have slot machines in grocery stores, in liquor stores, at 7-11s, at Rite-Aid, you name it. They'll get a little mad if you smoke in the aisles. Coming from L.A. it was a major shock. I swear that 50% of the smog here is from cigarette smoke.
