I`m new here and I havent had the time to check out the forum.. so if these questions sound a little familiar please forgive me. I`m not only new to this website but I`m a begginer as well. I would like to know which road to go down...start off reading tableture or progressing with traditional music lessons? I just purchased a Gibson LesPaul with a VOX amp. I really dont want to take private lessons, so I`m trying to decide my best course of action. And could anyone please recomend any teaching literature...books,DVD`s ect..., Thanks!

Well, you've certainly come to the opposite of the wrong place. You can get plenty of guidance here. There are some beginners lessons around here somewhere that can help you get the right start. Ah, there it is. Up at the top of the screen is a button labeled "Beginners." You should be able to get a good start there.

yeah.... use the beginners section here and get the basics.
If you still find yourself totally into learning, sign up for the site and follow along with videos and tabs.
I kinda work here, but I've never heard anything but praise for the place.

In addition to that, the people are cool. Sure we get off topic every now and again, but in the event that a question or something arises there's always someone around that can answer it.

Thanks for the reply....I must apologize for not being more specific. I understand this site is for begginers and I`m sure that the lessons here are second to none. But I dont have internet access as much as I would like and if I took advantage of the 150 free lessons I would have to live to be 105 years old in order to complete the first 50. Thats why I asked for literature,DVD`s, ect.....Thanks again.

Ah.. umm.. I can't really help you as much on those in particular since most of my reading comes from the internet. I don't know quite what style you're going for, but I do have fond thoughts for John Petrucci's Rock Discipline video. Maybe/hopefully someone else can help you better than I.

I think you should start by learning your major chords, then minor chords, power chords, and then learn some strumming patterns. Then you can move onto tab. You will be able to recognize different shapes of patterns in songs when you're trying to learn them if you learn some chords first.
I am a constant evolving music machine. Oh Man, I just forgot what I was playing. Oh well, on to the next song.
