I recently began Guitar lessons and am now on the look out for my first proper guitar. I currently have a very old guitar that has been stuck in my attic since 1849, so am very open to all suggestions as to what you guys think would be the best guitar that I could go for.

My max budget is around £150, cheers.

If it was me, I'd sell that antique guitar and increase my budget five-fold.

What kinda guitar you got? I'd probably go with earthman on this one. Out with the old and in with the new. Or if you think the guitar could be fixed you might take it to a luthier.

yes, what kind of guitar is the old one? if it is older than 35 years, it becomes vintage, and there is a very good chance you may want to keep it...you may be sitting on a goldmine there, depending on the brand, model, condition and finish.

also, if its a nice vintage electric, its probably a whole lot nicer than any guitar you'll get for 150$.

I was exaggerating slightly ;) It's about 10 years old, It was bought from a retail chain and is worth nothing. My budget is £150, NOT $150, so I have about $270. It's an acoustic guitar i'm after, just something I can start off with, nothing spectacular.

Thanks for the advice so far guys.

For around that price or slightly more $300. You can get a very nice solid top Alvarez. I just got the AD60S for 180 but that was a local shot and they were having a 'blowout' sale. I never expected to get this guitar for that price. They are very nice and if you're like me, it's way more guitar than I currently need but will be plenty for years (perhaps forever) to come!

I'd go with the Alvarez myself. The applause looks like an ovation. I don't care for ovation guitars, though they sound good when plugged in. It's the unplugged sound I can't stand.
