I don't know if this has been done before, but I' curious. Playing ability and voice aside, who do you think writes the best lyrics?

I really like Les Claypool and Anthony Kleids, cause it's just like-whoa! How do you come up with that? And their lyrics are not like I'm mad/She left me now I'm sad.
For life is quite absurd and death's the final word, You must always face the curtain with a bow
Forget about your sin - give the audience a grin
Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow.

I enjoy Don Henley's lyrical prowess. He's a story teller but that appeals to me.

Aaargh, there are too many! Here are a few of my favourites:

Paul Simon (Solo, Simon and Garfunkel)
Neil Young (Solo, Crazy Horse)
Robert Flynn (Machine Head)
Ani diFranco (solo)
Roger Waters (Pink Floyd)
"It's all folk music... I ain't never heard no horse sing!"
- Attributed variously to Leadbelly and Louis Armstrong

If at first you don't succeed, you are obviously not Chuck Norris.

I agree with Don Henley, as well as Glenn Frey. Especially when the two of them are writing together.

Lyrically, I think the Tragically Hip are the best. I don't know who writes their lyrics, I assume it's Gord Downie. Whoever it is, they write songs like I wish I could. I also like Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain. Time by Pink Floyd is one of my favourite songs lyrically because it sounds like something I would try to say in a song, so I guess whoever wrote that (Roger Waters?) is up there too. I'm gonna stick with the Hip though.

John Lennon.... Paul McCartney???? No one has even mentioned them yet... I would also have to say Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews, Damien Rice, Jason Mraz acoustic singer songwriters are usually the best songwriters in my opinion...... There aren't a lot of great songwriters in rock music these days... I agree with a lot that have been mentioned though.

Yeah, them guys too. I Am the Walrus is one of my favourite songs for lyrics. The only reason I didn't mention 'em was because a lot of what made them good songwriters was the music. And some of their lyrics just don't appeal to me. Like "I Want You (She's So Heavy)." You can't really say that's a good song for lyrics.

Can't leave out George, either.

Please, you're making me blush! Remember your challenge? Haha, I'm pretty proud of that song.

Rockonn91- Haha, thanks dude! I'm glad I'm getting some lyrical appreciation. I could use it right now.
