Lately I've been trying to compose a funky progression, but I can't seem to come up with anything other than blues-based power chord riffs in Eb :o . Could somebody please give me some pointers on where to start when writing funk - and how to break out of metal mode?

If at first you don't succeed, you are obviously not Chuck Norris.

Play around with this chord shape. I'd say it's funky.

First of all, grab a wah pedal. Now just vamp on the root chord with a bunch of percussive X note strums altered by the wah pedal. That'll get you into a basic feel. Personally I just do 5ths and 4ths and such double stops.
I want the bomb
I want the P-funk!

My band is better than yours...
