I'm with Akira here, you need a basis to help teach your ears first, don't you?
Don't worry too much about me, ignore me long enough and I'll go away.

Accurate, dude, in tune is just in tune. You cant get any more accurate than the point when your gutiar is tuned. But as far as accuracy goes my money is on a good tuner, I mean we werent born with a tuning fork in our ears, and I am sure all the people you jam with will appreciate not having to stop, and turn down, and wait for you to retune by ear, and wonder if your tune is the same as theres. I have met very few people who can, "for instance", hit a dead on universal E note 1st, and 6th string by ear,( close maby,) but music aint horseshoes, and every one you play with hopfully has a tuner so they can hit you an open E note that you can tune to them, other wise you all might be playing in F sharp/G flat,or who nows, roll the dice and see where you land. Besides, you will see that once you start using a tuner, and see how much easyer, and , quicker, and more precise, as well as band mate friendly it actually is you will never look back,( unless your tuner gets stolen) ! Tuning by ear is gutiar lesson #1, every one should know how, but once you do know how "move on"

Yeah, being able to tune by ear is important, but in most cases it's faster and more reliable to use a tuner. Some people are good at tuning using the 5th fret of the lower string to hear the note, and with this method you can get the strings all tuned to each other but if one string is off then no string is on the right note. When I use this method I usually end up in a perfect half step down. The guitar is all in tune, but not to the same tune anybody else would be playing in. And then you could use another persons instrument to tune your strings, and go from there....but seriously its much more convenient using a good tuner. However, as I said, learning to tune by ear is important especially since it allows you to learn notes so you can play songs you hear or compose your own. Keep on practicing, it takes a long time to really get it down, I still have a ways to go before I could say with confidence I can tune by ear and I've been playing for a while now.
You go outside and practice screaming. We'll play music while you're gone.

I can tune alright by ear because I know how a G chord should sound. I still prefer a tuner though.

If I understand you rite, your saying you still cant confidently tune by ear. You are helping debate tuning method, so you must have some expeirence with gutiar. Alot of gutiarists tend to try and learn the most difficult, complicated aspects of playing, and dont bother with the basics first. Understanding the fretboard notes, and open string notes, and why they are tuned to specific notes, and for what reason is probably the most important thing you should fully understand. If I were you I would backtrack and study gutiar tuning method A to Z, and a touch of basic music theroy to put it all in prospective for you. Trust me, It's not hard to learn, and an absoulute nessesity if you want to progress on to gutiar lesson #2, of which you cant fully understand untill you finish lesson #1. You watch, you and your mates will notice an improvement in your playing very soon after you have mastered the fundamental basics. You cant really learn to write before you can read, and if you did there would be no way to understand, and correct mistakes, and improve. Im sure you have talent above and beyond most, but untill you patch up the missing fundamentals you really havent even started.
But thats just me.
