X = play the notes dead?

hi again, im trying to play a song, and on the tablature, it has these x's, and the key says to play the notes dead when i come to it, can anyone tell me what that means plz?

Hi Tyler,
It means to strum normal with the right hand, but only touch the strings with the left hand. In other words, don't press the strings all the way down on the frets, just lightly touch them. Vary the pressure of your left hand for different sounds.

If the x is on the low E string or A string, such as in a simple A chord, is it safe to just miss the strings while strumming altogether, or is a dead play the universal way?

Either way. They sound a little different but it's up to you. Niether way is wrong.

so, when im playing the x part, i just gentaly touch the string and strum down 3 times?
the song is Float On, in the beggining, if u want to know also :)

Lightly touch all three strings and play them as you would a chord. Keep your fingers on the chord and just release the pressure on the frets.

You would still want to mute it because chances are you will hit it by accident and it will ring out. Keeping other strings quiet takes practice and you should try to do it everytime you play.
