OK, I have my Yamaha Acoustic & lovin' it ... I have some "soft" picks ... is that what is recommended for the beginner or does it really matter at this point since all I'm doing is learning chords. Thx .........
Pick Gauge ?

Use whatever feels good. I personally use Clayton Ultem .88mm picks with my acoustics. I find that they have a crisper tone than the Acetal 1.2mm picks I use with my electrics. Picks are a personal thing. Some like really thin and flexible picks, while others like thick and stiff picks. It all depends on what feels right to you. I'd suggest trying several guages out to find what works best.

I use Jim Dunlops, I don't remember what mm I use on my acoustic, but I know that the thinner the better for me for the same reason as PRSplaya. Thick picks on acoustics just sounds too clunky for me. On an electric though, I use a .88mm. I find that I have more control with it since I typically play faster on the electric than I do on the acoustic. Tis one of those things that we all must discover for ourselves.

i think thin ones sound nice on acoustics and thicker for electric thin ones wear away too fast on electric guitars

I like Dunlop Nylon .73mm and .46mm for acoustic. Then for electric I like Dunlop 1.0mm and I also like the Dunlop Jass III. It seems the thinner picks give me a better sound on my acoustic and the thicker picks give me better picking control on my electric.

The good thing about picks is they are inexpensive. I got a ridiculus amount of picks in a shoebox all sizes, shapes, and colors. When I practice I usually just grab one and if it isn't working for what I'm doing I find another one. I do have my favorites when I record though.

I like variety. Some stick to what they love. Nothing wrong with either.

I find it difficult to worry one way or the other about the brand name I'm using at a given moment. I do like pics with the rubbery grips on them. Something nylonish with a mostly medium thickness.

fender medium picks work for me, I don't like when the pick has too much flex, and I hate it when they are so thick that they have no flex at all. so naturally a medium works well for me.

Personally, I like Davas.(standard) It is a specialty pick. It is multi-guage.... So the further away from the tip you hold it, the thinner it feels and sounds. Back for rhythm...choke up on the tip for punchy lead. Plus....you will prolly loose it B4 you wear it out! I have been playing for 30 years and instructing for 16 years. (Most of my students have switched to them) It is the BEST pick for me.....Give them a try!!!

i dont like heavy's that much. mediums are great all around.
i also saw this on a site i was looking around on and was thinking about buying it for my acoustic. its pretty expensive tho, just for one pick.

I bought one before and really didn't care for it. It ended up like most other picks I buy. I either lost it or a friend walked off with it.

I usually use fender mediums for acoustic, and fender heavys for electric, though if i play electric with the medium or acoustic with the heavy, i really don't mind.

i go back and forth between the .88 tortexted and the 1 tortexted.
i'd play thinner picks but they break on me. the thick ones just end up getting a sharp, worn edge.
